The Core

5.5

  • A special effects spectacle. Worthy of seeing.

I saw the movie, "The Core", and was surprised about the special effects. The movie is worth watching just for the effects. The best effect was involving the space shuttle.

I also saw "Independence Day" which was just special effects, and not much of a plot. That said, I now compare "The Core", which in addition to great special effects has a good story line.

The movie was sort of a re-make of 2 other movies. "At the Earth's Core" and "Journey to the Center of the Earth". The plot in "The Core" and the previous movies were about the same quality. That quality being good. The big difference is "The Core" moves faster.

Is this scenario, story possible? Not hardly but then again when was the last time you believed in civilizations living within the Earth's crust. Confused? Well you'll have to rent Journey and At the Earth's Core to get the gist. Just make sure you order a couple of coffees or cokes for Journey. It is longer and somewhat boring. Of course if you rent the video you can fast forward through a few parts in the first hour.

Back to "The Core". It was like the producers saw "At the Earth's Core" and made this version even more exciting. At the Earth's Core is still one of my favorite sci-fi films.

If you love sci-fi, you must see "The Core". Great acting, great special effects, good story. The kind of movie that the Academy Awards love to snub. If I was on the Academy, I would certainly nominate this one for Special Effects. Of course we have only seen the beginning of the "Big Summer Movies". It's possible "The Hulk" will have even better effects.

Even so, I give this movie a 9 out of 10.

My only suggestion is I would rather see movies without heavy duty politics.

Hillary's character was just a bit over the top. An I am better than men character, stronger, smarter etc... which sends the message that men are mindless idiots. Come on Hollywood you can build up both women in the world without having to tear men down.

The anti-corporate, anti-government and anti-tech concepts need to go away too. This movie showed that government, business and high tech was all wicked and bad.

That said, I still liked this movie and you should all go see it, especially all you sci-fi fans.

    Thank you!
Vanessa Redgrave, Donald Sutherland, and Lawrence Dane in Bear Island (1979)

  • Good movie

I read the book and saw the movie. I enjoyed both. Donald Sutherland was excellent. This is a suspense thriller and so it goes slower than a typical action flick. If you expect this to be an action flick you will be disappointed. There are a few surprises which is typical of the writer's style.

If you want an action movie MacLean is not for you as he is the Master of Suspense and writes in a way to keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what is going on. If you see this from the middle, you will be bored, you must see it from the start and watch with full attention. If you miss any of the plot, you will get confused frustrated and wonder why you're watching the movie.

When you watch this, don't do anything else except watch it and I assure you that you will applaud this movie along with others like unto it like Where Eagles Dare, Guns of Navarone, Force 10 from Navarone, Ice Station Zebra, Detonator I and Detonator II, Satan Bug and a few more. The only one that dragged for me was Puppet on a Chain but I saw it chopped up on network TV so I need to see it again unchopped, unedited and not edited for television.
