Marry Me (2022)
Okay, it's cheesy.... but DAMN if it isn't adorable
Full disclosure, it's New Year's Day 2024 and I have had a few glasses of bubbly but I found the story simply lovely and uplifting.
It does have a certain 'Hallmark' predictability but it more than redeems itself by the performances of JLO, Owen, Maluma and rest of the cast. Part concert video, part retelling of JLO's own past relationships, part positive message about following your heart despite what society expects, part revealing what celebs go through.
Gotta admire JLO for 'going there', for the vocals, and for showing that the girl can ACT! The discomfort/repulsion she portrayed in a scene near the end... on the money. We've been there, we've done that, she captured it.
It might be the bubbly speaking but we loved it.
Some nice bits intermingled with the credits too.
Leave the World Behind (2023)
Potentially excellent. Actually, quite frustrating.
Firstly, where did they leave the rest of the movie?
Why so many dead ends unexplored, and unresolved?
The deer?
I went into this movie knowing nothing. With 4 quality acting stars, it could not fail to land, right? I now realise why I had heard so little about it!
What could have been a really satisfying movie, with a clear arc along which it carries the audience, this M Night Shyamalan tribute just fails to land.
We are left stranded.
Instead of the various clues and threads eventually resolving into something coherent and satisfying... someone just shouted "Wrap!" and went with a padded trailer episode as the film.
Some will defend this as being thought provoking and intentional. The idea being to leave the resolution up to the audience to decide.
Respectfully, I wanted to watch a movie, not a pilot for a series.
And what is it with the deer?? Damn you!!!
Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television (2017)
If you love comedy and deconstructing tv shows this is for you
It is self referential in the extreme,
it is so meta it hurts,
it rips the pxxx out of tv crime shows and their recurring tropes,
it gives some insight into tv show terminology and methods,
I SIMPLY LOVED IT. EAGER FOR THE SECOND SEASON.
Various cameos enhance the show in a similar way to the excellent EXTRAS by Mr Gervais.
