  • Good Setup, But Holds Back

Together follows Tim and Millie, who find themselves at a crossroads when they move to the countryside, abandoning all that is familiar in their lives except each other. With tensions already flaring, a nightmarish encounter with a mysterious, unnatural force threatens to corrupt their lives, their love, and their flesh.

The film sets everything up well. The characters, the relationship, the setting. I liked all that. The story itself was good, but the overall experience felt a bit flat and underwhelming. Things should have happen faster. When the horror, tension, or weirdness finally shows up, it's good. But it doesn't stay there. It never really sits in the moment. More time should have been spent in those moments once they happened, not necessarily more things to happen. It felt like the film was holding back when it should've leaned in. More should've happened emotionally and visually. It felt like it could've gone deeper or darker, and I was ready for it. That's one of my big issues with the film. The body horror and supernatural elements are there, but they could've gone harder with it.

The trailer gave away a lot, so if you've seen it, you've probably already caught most of the big horror moments. That takes away some of the surprise, which is a shame, because the film does have its own story to tell. It's straightforward and easy to follow.

What worked really well was the emotional side of it. The relationship felt real. You could see yourself in these two people, and what they're going through feels honest. Dave Franco and Alison Brie are great together. You can tell they're a real couple. There's a natural chemistry between them that makes everything feel more believable, especially as things start to fall apart. There are also a few funny little moments between them that break up the tension in a nice way, without messing with the overall vibe.

Overall, Together is a solid but not groundbreaking horror/drama. It explores some interesting ideas. I just wish it had pushed things further emotionally and visually. It had all the right pieces. It just didn't go far enough with them.

  • Finally... the Kills We Deserved!

I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025) follows five friends who inadvertently caused a deadly car accident. They cover up their involvement and make a pact to keep it a secret rather than face the consequences. One year later, the past comes back to haunt them as they learn someone knows what they did last summer. Stalked by a mysterious killer, they soon seek help from two survivors of the legendary Southport massacre of 1997.

This really is for the fans. It's a direct sequel to the first two movies and completely ignores the TV series, and I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer. There's a strong nostalgic vibe throughout the movie. Legacy characters return, but they're not the main focus, which I liked. It gave space for the new characters to grow, and I found myself caring about a few of them and hoping they'd make it out alive. That's not always easy to pull off in slashers.

The tone is campy and a little cheesy in places, but it works for what the movie's going for. It doesn't feel dumb or forced, more like fun, playful, and self-aware. It never tips too far into parody, which I appreciated. It knew when to have fun and when to get serious.

This movie delivers on the slasher side of things. One of the biggest complaints about the original was how it constantly cut away from the kills. That's not the case here. The filmmakers clearly knew what was missing and gave it to us. The kills are brutal, creative, and satisfying, and the chase scenes kept me locked in. I do think they could've given us longer chase sequences, but I'm still happy with what we got. This is the slasher energy the franchise has been missing.

There was one legacy character who showed up, and while I loved seeing them again, their reason for being there didn't really make much sense story-wise. But I'll be honest, I didn't care. I was just happy they were included, and their little scene was actually great for what it was.

The audio, that was a bit of an issue. At times, the dialogue felt kind of muffled or mumbly. I had trouble hearing certain lines, and it pulled me out of the moment a few times. I feel like I might've missed some jokes or important lines because of that.

The ending is definitely going to divide people. Some are gonna love it, some are gonna hate it. But personally, I really enjoyed it. They built it up well, and the reveal made sense. I do think they could've gone just a little further with it to make it impactful, but I still enjoyed myself.

Stay for the end credits. The final scene hints at a sequel, and if you're a fan, it's gonna leave you hyped. I really hope they follow through on what they're setting up.

Overall, it's a fun, nostalgic return to the franchise that delivers where the original held back with brutal kills and just the right amount of camp. While not everything lands perfectly, it's a satisfying slasher sequel that fans of the first two films will definitely appreciate.

  • Robots, Sass and Punchlines

M3GAN 2.0 is set two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and went on a murderous rampage. Her creator, Gemma, is now pushing for government oversight of AI. But behind her back, a defence contractor has built something new. Amelia, a military-grade infiltration weapon. As Amelia becomes more self-aware, she starts to question following orders. Hoping to stop her, Gemma decides to bring M3GAN back, this time making her faster, stronger, and even deadlier.

They definitely leaned into what made the first movie go viral. The sass, the campiness, and the funny one-liners. I love that they paid attention to what fans loved and cranked it up even more. The M3GAN dance is back, it's not as iconic as the first, but it's still there. And the M3GAN singing? Just as awkward and funny as before, maybe even funnier. I laughed at every joke they threw in. They knew exactly what this movie is and fully leaned into it.

The action scenes are fantastic. The way they filmed the fights, the camera movements. All of it was really engaging and was genuinely fun to watch. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. While the first movie aimed more for horror, this sequel leans heavily into sci-fi, action, and comedy. Kind of like how Terminator became more action focused in its sequel.

The downside is that as much as many of us wanted it to go all in with the blood and gore, it just doesn't. There are horror and gore moments, but they pull away right at the last second. There's a scene where someone's head gets ripped or punched off, but instead of showing it, the camera cuts to a shadow. Such a missed opportunity. I get they want to keep it PG so more people can watch, but honestly, the movie would have benefited from a higher rating.

It does take a while before we see M3GAN in her full body. It's about 30 minutes in, though she does appear earlier as a hologram or in another robot form. I didn't mind because there's so much sass and comedy keeping things entertaining. The movie runs a little long. Maybe trimming it slightly would help, but I can put that aside because I had a great time and laughed a lot.

Overall, M3GAN 2.0 is a super fun watch with lots of sci-fi, action, and campy humour. It doesn't deliver on the horror and gore, but it knows exactly what made the first one go viral and went with it.
