IDK what people thought? A movie about putting on an nativity play by a director known for making religious films would somehow be a secular Hallmark style religious vibes only film? It was relatively true to the book I recall reading many decades ago. It is religious in that the message of the book - a community learns to see the nativity story in a different light when the not usual suspects are cast - is present. It it trying to convert viewers to a particular denomination? No. Would I pay $20 to rent if for myself? Also no, but for a nice family time activity it fit the bill. I watched with my elderly parents who are church people with decades of Sunday School teaching behind them and they loved it.
