My expectations were not good so I went in expecting to be let down but surprisingly I wasn't. I'm 36 and took my children who are 14, 10, and 3 and my sister is 29 and she took her 10 y/o son. Obviously my sister and I grew up on this cartoon but the kids had never even heard of a smurf. There was a tad bit of crude humor for the adults but overall the film kept my attention as some movies I take my children to don't and I laughed quite a bit. My sister, who reminds me of Brainy smurf in every way laughed more than I did so that should say something. She's overly critical of movies and she liked it. My teenager is at that hard-to-please stage and even she enjoyed it. The younger kids had a blast and considering it was the Smurfs, I think they did a great job. George Lopez was hilarious! And azriel the cat was too funny. Some ppl need to lighten up on these critiques. Of course it's their opinion but they act like it should have had Academy-award winning performances...its The Smurfs! Lol! It probably didn't deserve the 10 I gave it but I had to help the overall rating some b/c it's abysmal. I think it's a 7.
I took my children and young cousin to see this movie and they, as well as myself loved it! My youngest child is five and she sat through the entire movie. From the reaction in the audience, it seemed that the adults enjoyed the movie more than the kids did. The singing was fantastic. And the Mexican penguins were too funny. Kudos to Robin Williams. You really couldn't tell that the accents were fake. He sounded very authentic. I would recommend this movie to everyone, even those people without children. I knew the movie would have a "happy ending" because the kids would've been very dissatisfied had it happened any other way.
This movie was absolutely awesome. I could relate to her regarding some personal trials she went through and it only made me respect her more. The last church scene was spiritually touching!
Fantasia did a great job of portraying herself. You go girl!!!! I was apprehensive about that choice but 'Tasia worked it out! The cast was also well casted. Chico Benymon is such a cutie. I love him from "Half & Half". Also, Kadeem Hardison has definitely grown as an actor. I can now see beyond the "Dwayne Wayne" persona. He IS a grown man now. I'm not familiar with the woman who played her mother but she did an awesome job herself.
It's just a great job done all around. Kudos to Debbie Allen on directing this hit movie!
