Wong Kar Wai is easily top 5 directors.
This is a classic film. I've never been to Hong Kong specifically but I have been to Asia and it certainly captures the magic.
Story is fantastic. Tony Leung is a magnificent actor that's worked with the top directors in China, including another different but favorite, John Woo. You will fall in love with the female leads as well. Cinematography if you care about that is one of the most unique styles you'll ever see.
Look, I took a film class and skipped the day the showed this and regret it severely. This movie is underrated on IMDB.
His other films, In The Mood For Love and Fallen Angels are on par with this movie as well.

With most adaptations you see directors taking not just creative liberties but just rewriting the whole piece to where it becomes unrecognizable (See Resident Evil franchise).
My Dress Up Darling live adaptation is really faithful to the source material and is as much fun. It has its own vibe too that makes it worth rewatching even if you've seen the anime and read the manga.
I was at first caught off guard by the actress that plays Marin but she flows into the role effortlessly with a great job! Gojo actor is also funny.
If you love the series this will be for you. I've been watching week to week as they come out, so it's been very enjoyable and I look forward to each new episode.

Look. Is it fan-service? Yes. A little pervy? Maybe. But damn if it isn't well written, quirky, and fun. It has so much heart. It's in my top 5 shows ever.
There are many animes like My Dress Up Darling. The cliche of the loner or loser hanging out with the popular girl isn't a new concept. But trust me when I say they don't stack up to this. I stumbled upon the series somehow while on an international flight and binged the whole thing.
I'm also not the biggest anime fan either. You likely have seen more series than I have. But it's completely worth your time.
Best way to describe it is a slice of life that dives into the world of cosplaying and awkward teen romance.
Give it a try.
