  • It was sleeping underground

The film begins with a radio broadcast, telling us that something has emerged from the ground and is killing people. These creatures do not eat, sleep, or harm animals, as we see in the opening scene where horses are calmly grazing. Where do they come from? What do they want? Why do they have a height limit?

These questions pique our interest, and we find ourselves exploring a new world with the survivors who are hiding in the mountains. The film is in the same vein as "A Quiet Place," where we don't see how everything happened, but we see the consequences and how people have adapted to survive. This approach is extremely effective.

To be honest, I thought that "A Quiet Place" and "Elevation" were made by the same team because the atmosphere and narrative are very similar. The only difference is the increased threat of violence.

If you've played the Mass Effect series of games, you'll find parallels and a general understanding of the threat hanging over humanity in this movie. I would recommend it to anyone who has played the games.

Like "A Quiet Place", this film discusses whether humanity can withstand threats that arise suddenly and quickly. This is shown by the example of super-predators that no one has ever encountered before.

    Why couldn't we?

Because it happened suddenly and quickly. No one expected this. Our main weapon, which makes us super-predators on the planet - our minds - becomes useless. As ordinary animals, we are weak. Only by joining forces and creating tools could we defeat nature. Now it's like being naked in a savanna of lions.

    Why can we?

Because what makes us human is still there - intelligence, courage, dedication, and love. If you give people the opportunity to survive, they will find a way to take the initiative. In the film, we see people who are not afraid to take risks.

Of course, it's difficult to overestimate the fragility of humanity. Just think about how much smarter and stronger we are than the civilization of our distant ancestors, the cavemen, who at that time were just as much smarter and stronger than the unintelligent apes. Now imagine there is a civilization in space that is just as much smarter than us. What are our chances? That's right, practically none.

The fact that these are ordinary predators with their own norms of behavior, their own restrictions, and laws of existence is already a spoiler that they will be defeated in one way or another. No physical power can defeat a strong mind, although it has the advantage of surprise, which almost destroyed us.

Anthony Mackie, a native of Texas, makes watching the film enjoyable. He is familiar to everyone from the Marvel movies and the Modified Carbon TV series. Maddy Hasson and Morena Baccarin are also pleasing to the eye. By the way, does everyone in Texas shoot so accurately with an under-barrel grenade launcher that it's already from the hip and accurately hits the target for several hundred meters? Where did they learn this?

The film lacks genius, but it leaves a pleasant impression. Films in this genre are rarely released, and I would like to see them released more often. Moreover, it's possible to create a huge universe out of it.

  • The most anticipated end of the world in history

The distant year 2012, which passed in our universe without any major disasters, was the most anticipated and discussed end of the world at the beginning of the 21st century. The end of the Mayan calendar greeted me on a pleasant winter evening when, at the age of 14, I just returned home from art school and started playing my favorite game. However, that feeling of waiting for something was etched in my memory for the rest of my life.

Not the least role in popularizing these ideas for my growing mind was played by films, especially the film "2012".

The beginning of the film sets an intense atmosphere, where you can feel with your back that something serious and terrible is happening. This feeling of anticipation and expectation is what makes the film so engaging. How did Hollywood film the end of the world for 200 million dollars under the direction of Roland Emmerich?

The film is an American adventure, where the storylines of serious scientists and a pushy government are replaced by a simple, friendly (albeit not quite) family. A fairly calm beginning gives way to a constant action game, where everything around is destroyed and rebuilt. Of course, the plot lacks some stars from the sky, but this film is more of an attraction for the eyes, which means that the plot should just be right to keep the audience entertained. And the best part is that it doesn't annoy you.

All the characters are slightly caricatured, but they are still enjoyable. Everyone conveys the right mood and evokes the right emotions, especially Woody Harrelson, who is always a pleasure to watch. The story of a father who regrets the loss of his family (or rather, is just beginning to think about it), a Russian oligarch, a good president, and a right-thinking scientist who is willing to risk the entire civilization just to save more people - this decision, of course, is controversial and almost led to a fiasco, but on the other hand, the right idea is voiced. And then who has the right to be called a human being?

In terms of special effects, everything here is at the highest level, as much as it was possible in 2009. Explosions, earthquakes, destruction of buildings, floods, the spirit of adventure - all this makes you want to even order a private viewing in the cinema to enjoy the views of the city. The film is designed for the big screen.

But at this level, everything is pleasant and ends there. If you try to delve into the plot and realism, it turns out that many of the scenes are simply absurd. The entire ending of the film has logical holes, and many scenes can be attributed to comedy. For example, when destruction spreads at a great speed, it can suddenly wait until the main character runs or climbs. A building collapses in slow-mo, and a door weighing hundreds of tons and matching gears can't chew through a cable a couple of centimeters in diameter. And that's not to mention the dilemma of whether to save a few hundred workers while risking the extinction of humanity.

If you don't think too hard, the film will bring exactly what it was made for - a family adventure and eye-catching attraction that is pleasant to watch on the big screen and that won't make you bored for the next 2 hours and 38 minutes.

  • Cozy, but not scary at all

The film "The Curse" is both a remake and an adaptation of the original movie, which was released two years before the current one. These short terms make you initially wary about the quality of the work, but the average rating around 7 gives you hope for a pleasant watch.

The plot of the film revolves around a cursed house where something lives and kills everyone who enters. The victims are good Americans, and the evil is a boy and a rather cute Japanese woman who try to be scary, but everything looks caricatured and even childish. I would say that the makeup in the film is at the level of the average fan of celebrating Halloween at home. That is, it's clear what the makeup is for, but it's not scary at all because you see ordinary familiar people behind it. In general, I immediately want to say that they failed to scare us.

Behind all this ugliness, you can see a good idea and the original, which is based on Japanese horror stories: the place where a terrible violent murder occurred becomes cursed and haunts everyone. The core of fear is that it is impossible to avoid the curse, no one will help, and it will get you everywhere and kill you in a terrible way. However, the environment itself and the Japanese atmosphere are alien to Europeans, Americans, and Russians, respectively, so it turns out to be quite bad to catch on, which is the reason for the lack of fear as such.

Despite the fact that the film does not cause much fear, it feels somehow cozy. It's like watching a good old movie that the whole family can watch on New Year's Eve somewhere. For many, this is the same horror story from childhood that was reviewed on tape on a fat-bellied TV. The aura of a pleasant home movie is hard to confuse with anything else, but is this an excuse for such a high average rating?

Separately, I would like to mention the acting game. The people were recruited charismatic, but as if by an ad. They don't try to act out any emotions, and even in normal scenes, I sometimes feel like their faces are made of wood.

If you look at the budget, it is enough to make a good movie, but apparently most of it went to the original author Takashi Shimizu, who is also the director and screenwriter in this film. He got a good feel for what the Japanese are afraid of, but would it be enough to just replace the actors with Americans and call it an adaptation? Why couldn't we have taken the same damn house somewhere in America or Europe, where there would be really scary and intimate scenes without cute Japanese boys? Because of this, the very basis of why the film causes fear is lost - it is the fear that this may be real and will happen to you. It just looks like a cute fairy tale.

It is clear that there was a desire to quickly make money on the popularity of the original, and the quality was not particularly thought about. Unfortunately, this is not uncommon, and it is these films that occupy the niche of the lowest ratings in the rating. However, it is still not repulsive to watch because of the concept itself, and you can relax in the evening after a hard day at this piece, if there is nothing else to watch.
