I'm going to make a solid attempt at writing this review without spoilers, but so far this is without a doubt my favorite episode of the series. The ending left me feeling dismayed I have to wait an entire week to get the next episode. This was absolutely fantastic, the writing was great, the execution was perfect. In the beginning of the season I was struggling a bit with Deb, it felt like she was lacking some of the charm from the original show and the bond between her and dexter as well. This episode brought that back and I couldn't be happier. All the call backs and reveals were so satisfying. The flashbacks in this episode were guttural and heart wrenching. If they continue to show everything in the last two episodes and don't skip over, I have no doubt in my mind I will be an emotional wreck. Everyone involved in this episode did an excellent job.
I have to say, I am overwhelmingly pleasantly surprised by how this series is going so far. I was a little nervous about the pacing in the first episode but all is essentially perfect by episode two. The cast is absolutely stellar. Patrick Gibson is so good as Dexter, there were so many moments watching where it really felt like I was watching young Michael c hall. I really love seeing the 70s story line coming into play and I have a feeling it's going to be emotionally devastating from the perspective of Harry. It really feels like the original show and the nostalgia is a joy to sit in. I am so excited to watch the rest of this season.
The cast is looking great so far. Im kind of amazed at how close some of the actors look and sound like the original cast. The actor who plays Masuka in particular has his mannerisms, laugh, and even the cadence of his voice down to a T. I didn't love the cinematography in the beginning of the episode, and at times scenes felt rushed through. But so far it was a satisfying start. I really like that we're getting to learn more about Harry's back story as well which we never got in the original. I hope as the season goes on the pacing feels a bit more natural but beyond that I'm really happy to see the characters again. Also, always a delight to see Sarah Michelle Gellar.
