Ice Spiders (2007 TV Movie)

Up There With Snow Shark
10 December 2024
Creatures and snow, this seems to be a bit of a trend at the moment, no complaints from though.

Throw in a ridiculous premise, bad acting, so-so special effects and you have a creatures gone bad horror movie.

I love these movies and this one was okay. The story, giant spiders in a ski resort, is a good one. It is the acting and the characters that let it down, but it is a movie that gives you what it promises, big spiders and bad acting.

Ice Spiders is a fun movie, turn your brain off and enjoy it.

There is not much more I can say about this to be honest I enjoyed the film for what it is. Grab the popcorn and enjoy.

A Study In Weirdness.
9 December 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This movie belongs to Carol Kane and there is no doubt about it. Lee Grant was great as the put upon sister Ellen who has to care for her insane sister Cissy. This character played by Kane is utterly unhinged.

The movie has a beautiful 70s weirdness that is almost hypnotic to watch. Will Geer as an old family friend is warm and kindly in this role and James Olsen is great at David, Ellen's colleague and love interest.

This is a hard movie to watch as the laud African music can become grating after awhile plus the horrible animal cruelty that is more implied, but still hard to sit through.

This is a somewhat obscure classic that really needs to be seen to be believed.

Beautifully Filmed
8 December 2024
This movie is a dark and moody study on the struggles and sacrifices that struggling artists make to create. Whether it is theatre, art, literature or music.

A young actress lands a part in an obscure play and she is plunged into a heart of darkness that ends up creating a nightmare world.

This is a beautifully filmed movie with a great musical score that helps set the mood and tone.

The acting is strong here with everyone doing a great job. Even though this was obviously made on a limited budget, there was real care and passion put into this film and it shows.

The movie is a dark and eerie psychological horror that explores the darkest recesses of the mind. This is a movie that needs the viewers full attention as there are small details that can be easily missed.

This is one of the better horror/mystery movies that I have watched this year,

Komodo vs. Cobra (2005 TV Movie)
5/10
Some Of The Reviews Here Are More Entertaining Than The Movie.
7 December 2024
A movie with the title Komodo vs Cobra us not going to be a classic. It is more like junk food or a guilty pleasure.

The special effects are okay, the acting, so-so.

The actors are there for their looks, not their talent.

This is a lowish budget movie that is what it is, nothing deep or thought provoking. There are great, 'nature goes wrong' movies like Prophecy or Nightwing that explores the impact of human activity on nature, such as, chemical dumping, using illegal chemicals. Pollution and the effects on the fauna and flora etc. But this ain't it. This is a cheesy dumb movie with people doing and saying dumb things, and I am here for it.

Is this a good movie? Nope, but it is a fun one.

A Shlocky Good Time
4 December 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I love trash cinema as long as they are entertaining, and as this one goes, it actually holds up.

An abusive man freaks out and starting assaulting his stripper girlfriend when she tells him that she is dumping him for another woman. She takes off and he takes it personally, by having a gender reassignment. Wow, that escalated. Now he is a she and on a kiiling spree. (Does that count as a haiku?) This movie was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. The acting was better than I expected and there were some genuinely tense scenes. Of course the whole premise is ridiculous, but that is where the fun lies.

This is no Silence Of The Lambs, but the abusive scenes were disturbingly realistic.

The kills were a little fake at times but at least there was effort put into a low budget production and it shows.

This was a pleasant surprise as I was expecting a lot worse.

Beautiful Anime
4 December 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I have to admit I have not seen the series so I can't compare the movie to it, but the animation is gorgeous, The voice acting is great and the action scenes are brilliant. I did have a little trouble following what was happening at times, the story seemed to be going so fast, but I still enjoyed the movie immensely.

The art style was lush and was reminiscent of the classic Japanese silk screen artwork.

The story itself, an evil force has found its way into a harem and it is causing madness and misery.

This is a great story and one that had me completely engrossed. The art style may not be for everyone but I loved the detail in every panel.

I will be watching this movie again.

The Weakest Of The Franchise.
1 December 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I love Hellboy and I really loved the first two movies. IMO, I think Ron Perlman is the best Hellboy and have the character real personality.

As much as I like David Harbour, he did not seem to be able to bring whatever it is that makes Hellboy, well, Hellboy.

I am afraid that Jack Kesy, even though he gave a good performance, still didn't look or sound the part at all. The sad thing about this is, that this would have been perfect for Ron Perlman. The Crooked Man is one of the better Hellboy stories and I think Guillermo del Toro would have been the perfect director for this.

But sadly, this is what we got.

But it was not bad news, the effects were great, I loved the giant funnel web. (I am an Aussie so it resonated with me,) The acting was good, but the way the story unfolded was ponderous and slow with some good action scenes thrown in.

This could have been so much better if the story had been handled with a defter hand. I did enjoy it, but it could have been just that bit better,

The Exorcism (2024)
5/10
A Bit Flat
29 November 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I do like Russell Crowe but he seemed to just be going through the motions here. Usually he always gives a strong performance but here, he did not seem really engaged.

The rest of the cast were good but the movie did not seem to be quite sure of what direction to take.

The story, a filming of a remake of The Exorcist, is a great idea but it all seemed to get a little bogged down and just started limping along.

This could have been a good movie if it had been handled differently.

Now having said all that, I love slow burn movies that are able to build a sense of dread. But this film ended up just meandering.

It is a shame because this could have been something great,

Cold Meat (2023)

Good Frozen Treat.
29 November 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This is not a bad horror/thriller, it starts off strong enough with some tense scenes that sets the tone for the movie.

It begins in a diner with an ugly scene between a waitress and her brutish ex and ends in an unexpected way.

There are plenty of twists and turns in this movie and the scenes between the protagonist and antagonist are great but I have to say the idiot ball gets handed around quite a bit.

The movie moves along nicely enough but it does get a little muddled at times.

It does give you the feeling of cold and growing desperation as the reality of the situation sets in. It also has a nice payoff in the end though.

Good But Not Great
24 November 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I like the Humpty Dumpty movies and while they seem to be getting better, they still need a little work so to speak.

A young woman suffering with schizophrenia movies back to her mother's house in the country with her boyfriend in tow, Emily Webber as Bailee and Callum Preville as Tom are good in their roles as are Ivan Wilkinson as Officer Fulton and both Maureen Casey and Elena Blichfeldt as older and younger Lois.

The only one that felt out of place was John Eccles as Pete, his line delivery sounded so odd and disjointed, almost like he was reading from a book.

The story is a solid one but I did find the effect when it looks like Bailee is having an episode. The lights and effects were jarring and just looked wrong. But despite all this, it was still a good horror even though the plot got a little too busy. The evil boyfriend and vengeful couple didn't really add that much. Humpty should have been enough. Having said that though, I did really like the ending. Great final girl scene.

Ice Quake (2010 TV Movie)

A Guilty Pleasure.
23 November 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I love these crap disaster movies. Anything with a quake, tornado, especially with sharks and I am there for it.

This is a middle of the road movie that has the cliche kids in peril and cute dog going missing. (You just know the pup is going to turn up in the end.) This movie is okay, better acted than most but still chock full of the most generic characters. The heard headed military officer who seems to have the intelligence of a turnip. The family in peril etc.

It is not a horrible movie, more a forgettable one. Inoffensive and entertaining in its own way.

This is a pure popcorn movie, park your brain at the door and enjoy this frozen treat.

Salem's Lot (2024)

Not Great
23 November 2024
Warning: Spoilers
While I love Stephen King novels, Salem's Lot has a special place in my heart as it was the very first book of his that I read. While Carrie was his first published book, it was Salem's Lot that I read first. That way this movie is so disappointing. The movie was too short and would have been better as a two part mini series like Rose Madder. Also, why change the characters back stories. Both of Susan Norton's parents are alive and it was a motor bike accident that killed his wife. Yes I know it is nitpicky but if you are going to tell the story, then tell the story.

The vampire was not great, once again Barlow looked human, pale with long fingers, but he was charming when he needed to be along with his human familiar, Straker.

This is another dull attempt to tell a great story with interesting characters and a truly frightening story. Honestly, don't bother.

Rippy (2024)

A Competent Creature Feature
22 November 2024
I love Aussie horror and thriller movies, I also love the ones set in the outback. There are some great movies out there and even though it is not going to be a classic like Wake In Fright or Patrick, this is still a solid movie.

It is more in the vein like Red Billabong or Black Sheep which is a New Zealand film. It has a good cast and a great villain in the shape of a massive red roo.

Where as films like Razorback really ramped up a grim and bloody story, this is a little more light hearted in tone even though there were some gruesome kills.

I also loved the end credits that in a few animated scenes it tell the story of how Skippy became Rippy, (Yes I know Skippy was a wallaby) The cast did a good job and the photography was great, my only gripe is that many scenes were a little too dark but that seems to be a problem with movies lately.

This is by no means a perfect movie, it does have some flaws but it is entertaining enough to be fun.

Better Than I Expected
20 November 2024
This is a Tubi original and they are usually pretty good. This was better than most of them with an engaging story and decent acting.

A group of friends arrive in Italy for a friends wedding and bachelorette party that soon turns rather bloody.

This is a great vampire movie hitting a few cliches, but with a solid ending that Buffy would be proud of.

The filming and music was great, so many movie are being made cheaply with no production values, but this was nice to look at.

The setting was lovely and the story kept my attention right to the end, always a plus in my book.

This is not filled with gore, but there is enough not keep horror fans happy, there is quite a bit of sexiness which helps things along.

This isn't a classic vampire movie, but it is a fun one.

Just A Hunka Hunka Burning Junk
19 November 2024
With apologies to Elvis.

This is bad, not really bad, fun bad. Bad acting, bad effects, bad dialogue but so much fun. This is a movie to turn your higher brain functions off, settle back and enjoy.

I love these movies, they are a guilty pleasure. No real plat, cliches galore and hokey action scenes with cardboard cutout characters. Still it is fun and does deliver.

I am not going to add a description of the movie as it is all there in the title. A giant fire tornado that burns a swath of destruction. A bunch of bad guys after the good guys and an intrepid reporter out to discover the truth.

This movie is no Scorched or Burning but it doesn't set out to be. It is pure fun and that is all it is meant to be.

Enjoy.

Cosy British Mystery
18 November 2024
Warning: Spoilers
These are the slow burn mysteries I really enjoy. They are a guilty pleasure of mine.

While it is somewhat predictable, it is still enjoyable and an easy watch. The acting is good and it is always a pleasure to see Keley Grammer in a movie like this. Natalie Cox as Miss Willoughby was likable and did the job well as did the rest of the cast. This is not a movie that is action packed, but more a slow burn that takes it's time and doesn't over tax the brain. Some might find this a little too slow but it an entertaining watch with a couple of creepy moments in it. This movie could have worked as a straight ghost story but it is a great mystery.

Pure Fun
15 November 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Tubi makes some good movies and this is one of them.

Four draft queens end up at the wrong venue. They end up in a biker bar in the middle of nowhere but they decide to perform anyway. What makes this really entertaining is they actually used drag queens in the movie.

The four ladies end up having to fight off vampires and they do it in style.

This movie is so much fun. The acting is good and the action is great, Seeing drag queens squaring off against vampires was a treat.. The other characters are good and round the story out, especially the owner of the bar. This is a movie that has its tongue firmly in glittery cheek and has enough stilletto heels kicking vampire butt to keep the viewer happy, This is worth a watch.

More A Murder Thriller Mystery But Still Good,
11 November 2024
I like Canadian movies, the made for TV ones tend to be pretty good. This is a nice little thriller/horror that keeps the story moving along.

It is set mostly around a cinema with mostly unlikable characters. I don't know why, but I was hard pressed to find at least one sympathetic character apart from the young lead actress.

I have to admit, I did not see the ending coming, so extra points for that.

While it is not a perfect movie, it is an entertaining one. The actors do a good job and it was nice to see so many that had appeared in the X Files, so that was fun.

This is a movie that delivers what it promises, There are some solid kills and a couple of actually scary moments.

This is my version of comfort food horror, something that I enjoy with a warm drink and a bowl of popcorn.

Black Cab (2024)
8/10
Moody Horror
10 November 2024
Warning: Spoilers
It is a little jarring to see Nick Frost in such a chilling role. He was great in the cornetto trilogy and he funny, but here he is creepy and sinister.

The film does set a tense tone from the minute it starts and it is made even more tense by the bickering and low key anger between a young couple, Anne (Synnøve Karlsen) and Patrick (Luke Norris.) The climb into the back of the cab and that is when thing take a dark turn.

The cast here do an excellent job but this is really Frost's movie. As Ian the cab driver, he starts off chatty and jovial but there is an undercurrent that seeps out into something terrifying.

I love British horror, they are generally low burn and build tension and unease instead of going straight to the gore. This to me, is a strength and it makes the viewer uneasy which a good horror should do.

The movie isn't perfect as it does take a longer route than it needs to, but all up this is a worthy entry into horror.

I Had To Watch This Twice
5 November 2024
The first time I tried to watch it, I grew impatient and ended up turning it off. I remember thinking at the time that it was too pretentious and slow. I decided to give it another chance and I am actually glad that you did.

This is not your typical blaxplotation movie, this is not your typical vampire movie either. It's neither and it's both.

I am not even going to try and explain this, it's something that you have to experience on your own, This is a movie that you will either love or hate. There is no in between here. This is a film that goes deep into subtext and symbolism. This is a film that digs deep.

While it is beautiful to watch and it is easy to see how well crafted it is, it can still be difficult to follow.

I will give extra kudos to the great soundtrack though. It is perfect for the mood and tone of the movie.

Moody Horror
5 November 2024
This is a neat horror/thriller movies that is well filmed and very well acted. Relying on the strengths of its two leads, Rebekah Kennedy and Sean O'Brian.

At first I was not entirely sure of what was happening, but when I finally realised, it was a brilliant twist and it all fell into place.

The atmosphere and mood of the film was perfect and I loved the low key tension of it all.

In a way, this is a redemption story as well of a story about regrets and wanting to make wrongs right, so to speak.

This is a movie that may not be for everyone, some might find it a trifle slow, but it is ultimately rewarding.

Surprised By How Good It Was
5 November 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I have to be honest, I was not expecting much when I started watching this movie. I have a love for Australian and New Zealand horror and thriller movies. They are often well filmed with a great stories and good acting. Of course there are a few awful movies out there but most are usually watchable at least so I went into this with no real expectations and ended up having a great time.

Killer Sofa, which is actually a recliner is a goofy comedy horror but there are some really creepy moments in it. They way they were able to make the chair look sinister was clever and the effects were solid for a very low budget movie.

The acting was good, nothing special but the actors they their all.

This is not a perfect film, but it is not meant to be. It is pure bloody fun with some pretty scary moments.

Don't be over critical while watching this, just settle back and have fun.

Interesting Horror Movie
4 November 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This movie about vampires is a little more obscure than the more mainstream Hammer and Amicus, films. This is an interesting film with some memorable scenes. A huge man lopping off limbs at the behest of a vampire Countess, a dreary looking village that is deserted during the day but becomes lively at night. A bus filled with tourists that inadvertently end up at this village due to the sudden death of the bus driver.

The vampires start hacking and snacking and it becomes a very grim affair indeed.

It is a good movie with some great makeup effects and scary scenes, particularly with the children, The only weakness of the movie is the soundtrack. It is so painfully seventies and at times really clash with mood and vibe of the film. Other than that, it is worth watching as a bit of a time capsule of the seventies.

Goofy Cheesy Fun
29 October 2024
Warning: Spoilers
How could I forget about this movie? I rediscovered it completely by accident and I am glad I did.

This is considered the Airplane of horror movies and even though it is not as funny as Young Frankenstein, it is on par with Transylvania 6-5000.

The cast do a great job and it was a treat to see the late great Boris Karloff.

The biggest fun I had though was picking up all the horror culture references. There were so many and even though there are a few people who think it's lazy humour, but I loved it.

The humour is very broad but it does work because it is not trying to be anything else. The actors are clearly having fun and it does add to the overall tone of the movie.

This might not be for everyone, but it is fun and does have a charm of its own.

Brilliant Aussie Horror
28 October 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is absolutely brilliant, it is everything that an intelligent horror/thriller should be. Forget the endless Saw gorefests and the latest remake of an old horror movie, this is what we need. You'll Never Find Me is a dark and introspective physiological horror that takes place mostly in one setting with two main characters. There is a real cat and mouse feeling but who is the cat and who is the mouse?

The two leads, Brendan Rock and Jordan Cowan are wonderful, they carry this movie and that is a big task. The glances, the inflections in their voices. They are able to sell the uncertainty and growing suspicion growing between them. The storm raging outside gives the movie an even more claustrophobic feel, at times the cracking and groaning sounds like an old ship at sea. This is what makes the movie feel as though they are both trapped and un-moored from the rest of the world.

This is a film with nuance and it does not spoon feed its audience you have to pay attention. The hints are all there for people to pick up and pick through.

U have always said that Aussie for horror right and this movie proves it. It does not rely on shoddy jump scares or torture porn, this is storytelling at its best and not done on a huge budget.

This is a visual treat with deep and intelligent dialogue delivered with a natural ease that really sells it. The ending is the kicker though that will stay with you for a long time.
