I thought the first season was a bit slow, but compared to S2, S1 was like 24. You sit and watch, desperate for something to happen, but it never does. There is more filler than a 1970s British used car showroom - it is much more like a soap opera than sci-fi, but of course this seems to be the way now, as short stories are inevitably padded out to fit a seasons run, when it could all be explained more succinctly in a few good episodes
Really disappointed in this. The books, which I've not read, are well regarded. I thought Apple TV would know better than this.
For the most part, the acting is pretty bland and none of the characters except Tim Robbin's come across as believable. Common is laughably poor - who on earth decided to cast him in this role? There is a case to say he ruins the entire thing. Possibly not his fault mind you
The premise is excellent. The execution falls far short of it.

I absolutely loved this. There was enough promise in the reviews and I'd never got round to watching it. Burton is dripping evil in this as I've never seen him before. His face clenched and body language ready to kill - he is an absolutely nasty piece of work. One of the other reviewers nailed it, in that there is obvious good or bad morals here, just a bunch of different lives on display. Highly recommend it to anyone who loves gritty 70s British drama. I mention Get Carter as that's the gangster yard stick. Get Carter is more entertaining, but it's nothing like as nasty as Villain. I see where Gangster Number One and Sexy Beast draw a lot of influence.
.... But after watching this, I realise I knew virtually nothing.
I was born in 1971 in the UK. I studied modern history. I lived through the of the Cold War and vividly remember the Berlin Wall coming down. I remember the attempted coup in Russia. I remember the joy at the Cold War ending and Russia emerging from communism
Watching this, I now realise all I had was a hideously narrow view of things. You can't help but feel utter sorrow for the Russian people as the world collapsed around them and the wealth of the country was stolen. It's heartbreaking
This is a horror film. It was aptly named.
