This movie will affect you in a simple yet beautiful way. There are no special effects, no insulting dialogue or unbelievable action scenes, just stunning cinematography, life unfolding in a heartfelt manner, filled with the ups and downs of a life well lived. You'll need to settle, watch and listen, unrushed to allow this beautifully paced story to affect you, and it will. I felt touched and reflective, sad and uplifted, lucky to have unexpectedly stumbled across this gem and watched with no expectations.
I saw the first iteration and this follow up is in the same grain. Light entertainment that makes you chuckle in places, cringe periodically and recoil at times at the violence. He's not Sylvester, Arnie, Bruce (Willis), or de Niro. In this movie he's using his laid back, leave-me-alone, married nice guy attitude as a foil for a I-take-no-s*** pi****-off gangster approach. It's fun to watch, his acting is fine and the supporting cast does a good job but I can't really swallow him as a mean vengeful son of a b****.
What a disappointment. I've always found Cruise's MI movies just a special effects, pyrotechnic, storyless extravaganza, but this takes the cake. The series is definitely going out with a whimper. If you scratched your head about the believability of what you see on the screen throughout the previous movies, wait until you see this one. There are so many scenes where your disbelief is not suspended you'll be thinking about an after movie nightcap 30 min into the movie. There are just so many scenes that are shown just to keep you staring at the screen as bombastic car chases and explosions take place. Remember, Tom Cruise is not an actor, he's an action hero. He's not found in quality movies acting opposite great actors for the simple reason he would look weak. He does not want to be eclipsed by his co-stars so he always hires B actors to avoid this. If he acts in a decent movie he always chooses to be a minor player because those are the only roles he excels at. Think about it. Like Trump he's a master of self promotion and a legend in his own mind. He's 'famous' because he's an action hero, good or bad, and has attracted large audiences and the accompanying revenues that put him near the top in money-making. It's not about his acting skills, it's about choosing dare devil stunts that pull in young audiences. Shock and awe over stretching his acting chops. Most of his contemporaries have done TV, movies and done theatre and stage work. He hasn't. Most of the risks he takes on camera I have done. That's just my lifestyle; I take risks but it does not make me worth watching on the screen.
So there is such a level of unbelievability in the movie it is insulting. This movie is not just 'action' nonsense, it's a money grabbing stinker.
