  • Destinos: A Metaphor for Life

I don't think there is a man alive that could effectively explain how this show came to be, but the closest I have gotten is this: The crew filmed whatever the director had a dream about the previous night. You will have an episode dedicated to the main characters chasing dog around a city. You will spend what feels like 10 episodes on a man trapped inside a cave. You will follow Raquel around while she shops. All while Fernando is literally dying and his only wish is to see his grandchildren. This show is awful, it doesn't make any sense, and the only way to explain how little plot and continuity this show has is with the quote I started this review with.

And the characters... Don't get me started on the characters. Raquel is perhaps the worst investigator I have seen in my entire life. She treats the urgent search for a dying man's long lost grandchildren as a vacation, and spends her time buying more disgustingly hideous outfits that will make you puke when you see them. She truly has a worse fashion sense than Miley Cyrus on a bad day, and I do not say that lightly. This is made up for though with her romantic interest, Arturo. The reason why Arturo is at all interested in Raquel is perhaps the second biggest mystery in the show, being beaten only by the original question of "why does this show exist?", a question that we never get an answer to.

With all this being said, there is a pervasive beauty in how awful this show is. The simple fact that I could have written a better show in my sleep tips me off to the idea that maybe this pure garbage that was presented to us has a purpose. Maybe Destinos is meant to teach us to never take anything for granted. When we watch television, we expect that there won't be multiple episodes in a row dedicated to recapping the entire series, but Destinos subverts that. When we look at entertainment as a whole, we expect that the acting wouldn't be worse than a 2 year old that somehow got the main part in an Hollywood play, but Destinos has the inspiring bravery to subvert that. Once I realized this, Destinos truly changed me as a person. My outlook on life has changed for the better, and I have Destinos to thank for that.
