This show is an ode to reality television. It takes every trope and turns it on its head. People break the fourth wall, continually acknowledge the production process, and the longest running joke is the show itself. It takes a little bit from every successful reality show, mixes it together, and creates something that is somehow super familiar and totally new. It NEVER takes itself too seriously, and that is absolutely the best part. Joel McHale is a great host. As a long time fan of The Soup, it's nice to see him back. As someone that grew up in the heyday of over the top reality TV in the early aughts, this really hits the sweet spot - ridiculous drama, familiar characters, and engaging plot lines. Such a well done, entertaining show. Hats off to the writers. I really hope we get more!
This episode is a contemplative journey through Carmine's psyche, spanning multiple years across the course of his career. For anyone that's worked in the food service industry, it perfectly captures the beauty in the repetitive, often meditative work that we do day to day. It also captures the pressure, the stress, and the joy. The chosen score (Together by Nine Inch Nails) is a great backdrop. Dialogue is minimal, adding to the immersion of the episode. It's a nice break from the typical pace of the show and a great way to open the season. Top notch acting as always. Despite having some heartbreaking moments, it's an episode I find myself coming back to over and over.
