I really enjoyed this take on THE robot. And, this time the robot is the sh/ero. I thought mix of thriller, comedy, and gruesome was perfect. The main character was engaging and the narrative voice just right. I did not read or know much about movie before viewing and thought it was a rom com of two people falling in love. I hope a sequel (or third) is in the works. Would make a great series. And, there is a lot of story left with the world full of "companions" and humans who behave badly. The robot/human interaction story has been done repeatedly but with the continual advancement of A. I. and other assisted tech, the reality is humans will have to consider our relationship and morals to what we create and bring into our homes.
This movie is not a typical horror film with suspense, CGI, supernatural acts, blood, monsters, etc. The horror is the reality of old age, caregiving, finances, cultish religion, racism, and parent/child manipulative relationships. It is the worst horror because it can happen and does every day for many. I thought the performance of the two protagonists (and adversaries), played by Brandy and Kathryn Hunter, was very good. Their performances were not one-dimensional. This indicates the complexity of elders and younger generations when the roles reverse. However, Solange is over the top! The husband is totally unsympathetic and unrealistic to the degree of a postpartum wife. Where are the 24/7 nurses for Solange? Paid by Solange!
Overall, it was a good movie, but not the worst. It must be taken in the spirit of a good Stephen King and somewhat a moral tale.

If this movie is not an Oscar contender, then I don't know what the Academy purpose! Absolutely extraordinary! Moving true story, heartbreaking, inspirational, smart, and let's the world know that you cannot place people in one box and that's all they are. It also shows the strength and love of a family. The actors and direction are phenomenal. Chiwetel Ejiofor has proven his character building in past performances but his directing talents are just as great. He made each character important to the story and the audience care about them. He made no one a hero in this story; they were flawed but you could empathize with what they did and why. I can't say enough about Mary J. Blige! She's a Renaissance woman of the 21st century. A complete entertainer!! This holiday season, take a look at this movie and be moved in your spirit.
