If you're looking for a horror film that relies on to-the-point storytelling, some character studies (kind of), and an overall great story that is presented finely. No fillers, no B. S., just a scary -- but later beautiful story involving a dysfunctional family stopping at an old couple's house. Judy is an innocent child whose unloving and uncaring father is divorced from her caring birth mother (whom we do not see) and married to the cruel, hateful, and snotty Rosemary. This initially scary story becomes beautiful later on in ways which I won't divulge. Rather than relying on clichés, it tells a fresh and original story. The duration of the film is perfect, it is not too short, but it doesn't waste a second (except with the end credits of course).
A mixture of hilarity, archive footage, and mayhem! Priscilla Alden's masterful performance as Edith Mortley pulls the entire movie together and is spot-on. A fine example of a pre-internet era homemade film, it isn't merely a film, it is a work of art. Alden's acting depicts perfectly Edith's attitude in life. Edith sometimes utters expletives, and her hateful, cantankerous behavior does not cover up one bit her severe case of psychopathy. Given, then, that she has medical problems of her own (terrible mental health, that is), it is paradoxical that she is doing what she is doing. She "takes care" of the patients as the "nurse". Her brother, Gordon, is the "doctor" among the scene..
It is not merely a movie, it is an experience! A swirl of hilarity, adultery, murder, mayhem, amateurish cinematography, and recycled film footage! When it comes to weapons, he has varied taste, ranging from hammers to cleavers, and of course, knives. Meanwhile, his wife is at it with a Polish poet, who eventually impregnates her (and this pregnancy is implied). His routine is: To go to the home of the patient, murder her, and go home to twiddle his thumbs while his wife goes to see the poet. He is seen performing an abortion on his wife, Claire, and a patient, Donna, whom he fatally hammers in the back of her head.
