While the trailer for this film hints at a great ride, along the lines of Bullet Train, John Wick, or Kill Bill, the actual experience of watching it is quite different. This movie, (if you've seen the films mentioned above) is quite a let down. Sure, there's a fight scene here and there, some blood/gore, and a revenge story, but the main ingredients: Compelling characters, good dialogue, and skilled actors, are missing. The narration, voiced by H. Jon Benjamin (Archer), is a distraction that attempts to add light humor to the mix, but kills the mood quicker than bad music at a party. In short, this is a poor remake of better films you've seen before, and you'd be better served re-watching one of those.
An hour or so was all we could stand of this "music video/pop star" documentary, with occasional violence sprinkled in to keep us watching. Through all the scenes showcasing the stressful life of a pop star, we did get one or two creepy scenes that gave us a shudder. That said, much of the time, we were waiting for an actual horror film to materialize. At about just past the halfway point, we got tired of waiting, and watched something else. We enjoyed the original "Smile", and regret that the second movie couldn't deliver what the first did so easily: An original demonic horror flick we couldn't turn away from.
This flick is 2hrs 36min in length, and while I can't review the whole film, the first 40 minutes were nothing like the trailer, or reviews, indicated it was. Mainly, there was way too much "light-hearted" dialogue, which took away from any sort of creepy atmosphere a movie like this should have. Some scenes, even the ones intended to be scary, were almost comedic. It reminded me of films like "Shawn of Dead", which kind of mix horror with laughter. The trailer, and many critic's takes, indicate this is a super creepy film, but our experience, (and our opinion of what horror/suspense movies should be), is very different.
