I am just one of those viewers who actually love arthouse and indie films and like a challenging view. But honestly: the bad cinematography just went on my nerves minutes after it started. Always insane close ups and even though most praise the acting skills, which are sure GOOD, I just do not appreciate the hyper realism and endlessly staring at the lead actress staring dead into the void, navigating, irritated, snorting, crying. Also the sex scenes are not too long, seem realistic but the mouth sucking noises just went on my nerves. Yes, the film is realistic and tells a GOOD STORY. Did I enjoy the story? Bluntly said: NO. Good film, good love story that does not end well, well depicted in real life. Deserves a 9, but since I give honest reviews on my taste, this is a sad 6. Sorry folks.
Against popular believe in this review section: I really enjoyed it. It was slow, it was a bit surreal, it was weird. But it told in the silence, the slowness, the seemingly unexplaining parts - what war is about. Nothing. Cruelty just for cruelty's sake. Who is the enemy? Why is this the enemy? They dont know. They forgot.
This movie underlines militaristic cruelty and insanity, illustrates insane colonialism and paints the characters as tortured, insanely heartless and victims of this whole system.
Personally I thought the acting was sublime and esp. The fictional world, set design, seemingly set in the eastern desert with fictional cultures and thrown together artefacts makes this tale so enjoyable. The pace was slow, but engaging.
This is a film for those who like "strange" films.
