  • A bit long but

After Cynthia Erivo bravely came out in support of oppressed green people everywhere because someone edited her Wicked poster to portray, well, the Wicked poster, I expected this to be some unwatchable, over-acted nonsense. Now? How long do I have to wait for Part 2?

Wicked is a prequel to Tte Wizard of Oz, telling the story of how the Wicked Witch of the West (Elphaba played by Erivo) wasn't always evil and how she became evil. As much as I wanted to dislike Erivo, she is a talented performer and gives a fantastic performance.

Some people say Ariana Grande is incapable of holding her own in the movie next to Erivo and that her acting is not up to par. On the first point, Erivo is so good it's an unfair comparison for anyone. On the second point, I disagree. Grande is playing a caricature of a narcissistic popular girl (Glinda). I did find Grande's physical presence to be distracting. She looks so unhealthy.and it is so distracting that this, the fact that the movie is a bit too long, and my disappointment in the portrayal of the Munchkins is the reason this is not 10 stars. Perhaps it should be 8 stars because Jeff Goldblum is disappointing as the Wizard. I think he is miscast here among all of the talented stage performers and I like Goldblum as an actor. There's even a cameo performance by Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Mendel.

The performances are great, the costuming is great, and it's just a fun watch. When do we get Part 2?

I enjoyed this movie and I'm not a big fan of musicals.

  • I enjoyed this

I devoured all three of the books in this trilogy. They were fun, engaging, and the mystery was twisty.

Emma Meyers and Zain Iqbal were great as Pip and Ravi.

I have issues with parts of the story that are changed or left out. The characters are more complex in the book. Motivations driving behaviors are completely left out or given little attention. Twists in the mystery are left out. Angie Bell was a manipulator and a horrible person - a mean girl. The series treats her like a good person. I wasn't crazy about the casting of Max. Although the actor playing Max is attractive, I don't think he is attractive enough to fully communicate the psychopathy.

One of the things that bothered me the most was the horrible, fingernails-across-a-chalkboard, cringy music that they inserted in odd places, played constantly a - including over dialogue - it was just incessant. Perhaps if it was good music it may have been less obtrusive, but I had to mute the TV to get away from it. I hope they remove this nonsense if they continue the series.

I did enjoy this series. It could have been better if they just followed the book. It would have been exponentially better without the horrible noise they try to pass off as mood music. It was so bad, I am subtracting three stars for the "music" and two stars for changing the story and making it less than it was.
