Having read some of the more negative reviews, I was very pleasantly surprised by this series. Its a good story, well told. The technique of inserting the protagonist attorneys into the scenes they asking witnesses about is interesting and works well once you realise what's going on. The plot is a classical 'rich and powerful family' versus the law story and I like the way no one does anything out of character. Once you get past the unlikelihood of the initial conceit that sits at the heart of the story, you're away and flying.
I also liked the way that surprises come into play along the way but they're not the sort of impossible surprises that can infuriate. These are in line with both previous storyline and characters. Its a slow burn (although the speed with which the characters talk and the impact that has on the time taken the read the (occasionally not too well translated) subtitles could have been improved on.
Nice cinematography with not too much of the story sacrificed to the Directors obsessions.
I can think of many series much less worthy of a viewing. Enjoyed it right through.

The series got off to a decent start and looked to be going somewhere. A good idea, a low burn, nobody doing anything completely out of character and, then, boom! A main character, a policeman, a detective starts doing things and making decisions completely out of character and completely outside the police rule book. Now just outside but on the other side of the planet from the police rule book.
A real shame. This could have been good if they'd simply had a script in which characters did what their sort of character wold do in real life. That's all. It was that simple, but they didn't do it.
Went completely off-beam. Stupids are as stupids were written. I'm at the beginning of episode three and about to abandon it. Can't bear the idea of wasting another 3 hours plus that I'll never get back.

Put simply, this is magnificent. A very good story, told well, with good acting and a constant pace. Oh and the music's not too shabby!
This series captures the moment in time when, in a manner analogous to the failing attempt to maintain western power in South East Asia was going badly for the United States, Portugal's empire was crumbling and the aphorism 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend' was proving to be problematic. Its the middle of the Cold War and tensions are high because both Portugal and the US are enemies of the Soviet Union, but the US is funding one set of rebels in the Portuguese colony of Angola while the Russians fund another and both sets of rebels want to get rid of the Portuguese. Add to that that Portugal at that time was a fascist dictatorship with a very nasty secret police and an appalling human rights record.
All this sets the scene for a battle between Portuguese sympathisers of the indigenous Communist Party, the Portuguese authorities and the local representatives of United States focused on a radio station broadcasting for Radio Free Europe, the propaganda radio station established during WW2 during the fight against the Nazis, re-purposed during the Cold War to distribute propaganda against the Soviets and then continued to the current date until Trump's recent attempts to pull funding from the station.
This is gritty stuff. There are very few likeable characters. It captures the feel of late 1960's espionage very well and the story is very well paced throughout. It grips you and pulls you in all the while you want it to go away. It shows the nastiness of war and spying without glorifying anything. And it shows just what authoritarian regimes are capable of.
If you enjoy John Le Carre's stories or, going back further, you were a fan of Callan, then this is one for you. Highly recommended.
