First of all, take notes, Disney.
For the past decade, we've watched Disney butcher its own classics in the name of "live-action remakes." Naturally, when this film was announced, I had mixed feelings. I expected another soulless cash grab, especially considering this was DreamWorks' first live-action adaptation. I braced myself for disappointment.
But then I saw names like John Powell, Dean DeBlois, and Gerard Butler returning and my hope sparked. The casting looked solid too.
So I found a free day and went to the theater. From the first millisecond, goosebumps. Literal goosebumps.
The score? Absolutely perfect. They refreshed the original soundtrack, gave it polish and weight, but kept the soul intact.
The VFX? Chef's kiss. Mwah. Visually stunning.
It's almost a shot-for-shot remake of the original-and I mean that as a huge compliment.
As for the dialogue? I knew almost every line by heart. The nostalgia hit hard, but it all still felt fresh and alive.
Mason Thames was brilliant. He carried the emotions, the energy, and the vulnerability of Hiccup. He was perfect.
Nico Parker surprised me. I was skeptical at first, but she was a fantastic Astrid. Genuinely couldn't have asked for better.
All the cast did a great job. And Toothless? He looked incredibly real. Emotion-wise, I'd say he's 99% the OG Toothless, maybe missing a tiny bit of expressiveness. But that can evolve in the sequels. Still, he was stunning.
There's nothing bad to say here. Just good. The best live-action adaptation I've seen yet.
In fact, this might be the only one that truly deserves to be called a REAL live-action film.
DreamWorks, you did it. I'm waiting counting days for the rest of the trilogy.
Disney? Learn something. Or step aside.
