Buying London (2024)
RUBBISH AND LACKING ORIGINALITY
What a rubbish series. I would give it a zero if i could. A group of estate agents who to be fair are I think trying to work hard and earn a commission (and seem a bit awkward in front of the cameras), led by a very pretentious and not very British looking nor sounding boss who just makes me cringe.
This London series is trying to keep along the lines of the American real estate series, about the Oppenheimer group, with all the snide remarks and creating drama amongst its agents that its got no originality at all. Why don't they have a show about agents who are typically English, with dry British humour and wit instead of following the American mould?
I love the classy Parsian Agency series about the Kretz family because it is unique, has a very Parisienne vibe and does not follow the typical Buying Beverly Hill's or Selling Sunset pattern at all!
I was really looking forward to this London series because I love the London real estate scene, but I was honestly sorely disappointed with this rubbish...its just a copycat of the Los Angeles one..
Disturbia (2007)
Worth the watch..
I just watched this movie 17 years too late after it first came out. This movie was a pleasantly shocking thriller-comedy movie. Really worth the watch
A young Shia Lebouef acts as the main protagonist - an irritatingly cute housebound student recovering from a family tragedy and trying to get on with life. He and his two friends Ronnie and Ashley really complement each other. They act as teenagers, discovering/obsessing over the opposite sex all while in the vicinity of their neighbourhood - while the town was gripped in the deaths of missing young women.
The level of excitement is a bit like the movie Foul Play starring Goldie Hawn.. Thrilling yet funny! I was glued to my seat, frightened yet laughing at the same time.
Its a good, fun movie ! (except for the raunchy bits.)
Laapataa Ladies (2023)
A Rewarding Watch!
The movie Laapataa Ladies which was produced in 2023 is a heart warming movie about 'finding oneself' amidst the confusion of accidentally bringing back the wrong bride. It's such an unusual storyline- about accidentally losing a bride on a train but it does make for an excellent and rewarding story. This movie was given a #10 in Movies Today, and i will say its well deserved and I was not disappointed. It's a light comedy that brings a good social message about women empowerment in a very gentle way. It shows the beauty of rural India too - love the scenery and the very charming village life. I don't recognise any of the actors except for 1 but I'd say they all did a great job. I loved both Phool and Deepak especially. Their innocence/eagerness is very charming and endearing.
It goes to show good movies don't need big budgets, fancy sexy costumes and choreographed dancing. Just natural rural village grittiness and simplicity.
I had a very big smile at the end of the movie..can't wait for Jaya to come back from Dehradun to get married and apply her newly learned knowledge to the village.. Hope there's prospects for Part 2.. haha.
Why Do You Love Me (2023)
CUTE MOVIE ABOUT "BECOMING MEN"
This is a very sweet movie. I just wish they did not waste so much time on the lives of the boys at home in the 1st part of the movie. I think it was too detailed and showed the bad acting of actors who played the role of their parents. Instead more of their time on the road should have been shown - their travels, ,the interaction of the four travellers, their food, their touring around the cities they visited etc would have made the movie less boring. Maybe a bit more focus on Endang's life as she plays a pivotal role in the movie. Baskara was an irritating character, a bit over acted I thought, but Danton and Miko and of course Endang were very likeable. The subject matter may be a bit uncomfortable for some but the way it as portrayed in the movie made it rather cute and not obscene at all.
The soundtrack in the movie was really very good too!
Wonder Woman (2017)
SAVE YOURSELF THE TROUBLE
I just watched this movie a few weeks ago with the family and was sorely disappointed. The storyline was not too bad, though of course quite unbelievable in some parts - i watched this movie knowing all Super Hero movies don't have to 'make sense' of course. I was hoping to like it because I did enjoy the original Wonder Woman with Linda Carter. As the lead actress she brought an aura to the movie and we wanted to root for her because she was likeable. But this new Wonder Woman was stiff. I had never heard of Gal Gadot before in my life and for sure that will be my first and last time watching her act - stiff as a rod and really unbelievable 'acting'. Nothing to endear me to her somehow. The rest of the cast were alright but if you have an unrealistic actor as protagonist, it makes it difficult to like the movie. Pity though because I did like Linda Carter and the original Wonder Woman. Sigh..
The Following Events Are Based on a Pack of Lies (2023)
Pity...Could have been better.
Not too bad a series, with an interesting storyline but it would have done much better with different lead actors.
Rebekah Staton is as stiff as cardboard. I know she is supposed to portray a fearful and bullied woman but she came out as an absolutely brainless bore. Why should everything turn out badly for Alice? Her bad luck and inaction became unbelievable after a while..
Alistair Petrie too relied too much on his facial expressions, it looked unbelievably over acted - and the first episode of him clumsily riding his bicycle around university like a mad man made it look like the series was meant to be a comedy.
Marianne Jean Baptist was as usual a good actress, but was some what too strong an actress and became a stark contrast between the other 2 weaker lead actors.
Ankahi Kahaniya (2021)
UNDER RATED
Ankahi Kanahiya is a very interesting and poignant trilogy about love. The first 2, about finding and losing love, and longing were excellent. It's not the typical Indian Bollywood movie with lots of dances and songs. Just good storylines and we'll acted - the first was such a strange story, it really made me laugh out loud at times. I understand that the ratings may be low because its not acted by the big name stars, but that is exactly where the attraction of this movie is! Not everyone enjoys dance scenes - I for sure don't, so I am thankful this movie had none of that.
Do watch this - it is light and rather delightful.
Aftershock: Everest and the Nepal Earthquake (2022)
Riveting - A Must Watch!
This is one well documented docuseries that I found so riveting, I watched all episodes in one go.
The scenery was amazing, anyone would feel small in the majesty of the mountains. The Nepalese are religious and believe in the sanctity of the mountains and believe that places like these should be treated with respect, thus I was shocked to see in one of the earlier stills, 3 Israeli men undressed and showing their bums. That was so disrespectful and in poor taste. And then they showed their true colours when one of them broke a chest belonging to a deceased man and taking his money, and then making excuses for it and accusing the Nepalese of being violent! It was absolutely disgusting and inexcusable behaviour. It just left me shocked that people from a supposedly civilised country could, in a time of grief, steal from a deceased person who probably had to struggle to make a living and save that money.
And after watching the docuseries, I still don't understand why people want to climb mountains when it is extremely dangerous and can cause deaths, even under normal circumstances.
To the people of Nepal, i wish you all the best in coming out of the tragedy and in rebuilding your country and may it never happen again...and to all climbers, the Everest mountains are not a playground to be partying and having fun in - its a sacred place for the locals. Have some respect!
Bullet Train (2022)
WHAT A FUN RIDE!
This is among the best action comedies of late. Maybe the best movie of 2022! The speed at which the movie goes is amazing and its just thrilling from the start to the end. Goriness aside, I had so many laugh out loud moments watching this. It reminds me a bit of the movie Foul Play for its speed and craziness. What a blast this entertaining movie is! Kudos to the director David Leitch and the whole ensemble. Nice to see Brad Pitt not take himself too seriously and allow himself to look foolish at times.
Love the backdrop of Japan and its culture, down to Hello Kitty soft toys and vending machines - and the music interludes, really matched the scenes! So cool!
If i had a negative point to say, it would be White Death's explanation scene with Brad Pitt - i found those parts a bit slow and boring.
For those seeing the low reviews, I'd say give the movie a watch without expectations and don't take the movie too seriously. Its just pure fun and entertainment .
Our Ladies (2019)
HEARTWARMING & ENJOYABLE MOVIE
Heartwarming coming of age movie about friendship between Catholic girls. Witty script with parts where I laughed out loud - when one of the girls mentioned Mad Cow's Disease was one. Its also got its poignant and touching parts too. Its quite a gem as its not very often when I come across movies like this - I am really so glad i did. I must say I have never seen any of these actresses act before, but they are all very good.
Motel Makeover (2021)
UTTER RUBBISH
WHo on earth are these 2 whining women? Its just complaints and whining and negativity from them. To them everything is awful, and yucky and dirty. Were they FORCED into this makeover business because it sure sounds like they were???
Really, do yourself a favour and don't waste your precious time watching this...i wasted 10 minutes of my life watching this rubbish.
Elize Matsunaga: Era uma Vez um Crime (2021)
Badly made series
What a boring, repetitive series and so badly made.
It could have been better, because its quite a interesting story line, but it just could not capture my attention. Choppy, trying hard to extend the length of a time for the series by repeating the same bits again and again.
Honestly do not waste your time watching this.
Last Christmas (2019)
A PLEASANT SURPRISE
It was such a pleasant surprise to watch this and it was much better than I expected. Its a very sweet and heartwarming movie, and having Wham and George Michael playing in the background was an added bonus for me.
I have watched some terrible Christmas movies but this one was lovely and I think it should be in the list of Christmas movies to watch, along with Love Actually and The Holiday.
Don't believe the negative reviews - do watch it and sing along to George Michael. It really made me smile!!
Us (2020)
LOVED IT!
This is such a heartwarming and feel good family drama. As is normal in most families, not all of the characters are likable but that is the beauty of this series - it realistically portrayed a typical family. I loved the European background scenes and I felt rather fond of the clumsy Tom Hollander as the series went along.
Its funny but also moving and made me reflect on my own relationship with my family.
One bit that I did not like was the constant flashbacks - was it really necessary??
All in all I would say its a must watch for married couples.
The One (2021)
Oh dear
The story line is quite interesting but the lead actress/villain is so stiff and self conscious of the camera, watching her became a distraction. Fortunately the other actors were more believable so that made me continue watching.
Its not a masterpiece ( I did not enjoy the going back and forth in flash backs ) and was a bit slow and dull - I just feel it could have been better if the lead actress was someone else.
Bombay Begums (2021)
NOT TOO BAD - DON'T UNDERSTAND THE VERY NEGATIVE REVIEWS
A very entertaining story line set in contemporary urban India about 5 women, each with their own situations and all interwoven into 1 story. Who would have thought there was so much drama among bank staff.
I just think there were too many sex scenes in the series - totally unnecessary and does not bring any weight to the series.
Anyway, with the way it ended in episode 6, I am hopeful that there will be a Second season soon. Looking forward to seeing more of this series.
I Care a Lot (2020)
Waste of Time
It was promising in the beginning and just became ridiculous as the story wore on, which is such a pity. I can imagine the movie would be really quite good if its was acted by different actors, and with a more interesting and plausible story line .
I hated Peter Dinklage's over acting and show of anger throughout the movie - they should have cast someone else for the role.
I also don't understand the very loud and absolutely unnecessary background music played throughout the movie.
A waste of 2 hours of my life. Even giving a 1 star rating is being too generous.
Life (2020)
Very Good and Heartwarming Series
I really enjoyed watching this series - the situations and actors are very true to reality. I felt like they were talking about my life in several instances, it was so relatable.
I didn't want it to end and am looking forward to a Season 2 if any - I really want to see how the characters and relationships develop.
Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives (2020)
OH DEAR..
I have no idea why Netflix agreed on showing this pathetic series. I cannot imagine a more unnatural bunch of women who are such wannabes but what else would one expect from something produced by Karan Johar!
How i wish they had shown a more Indian side to their lives... I think that may have gone down better with the audience as I am sure there is a nicer side to them.
I am also just taken aback by how 1 of these women has a mouth of a sailor. Every other word that comes out of her mouth is a nasty and vulgar one..she has such a potty mouth and is such a rude bully.
Maybe the other 3 friends should really reconsider who they are friends with because they genuinely seem so much nicer than her!! I really cringe at her rudeness and how offensive she is!!
I must admit I had to refer to Google ever so often to see who these women are and who they are married to - and apparently they are not even on the A list of Bollywood stars nor wives.
This is going to be the first and last time I will watch anything produced by Karan Johar and anything with that potty mouthed woman whose name i just cannot remember!
The Singapore Grip (2020)
I did want to give it a chance but..
I really wanted to like the series because my mother lived through this period of the fall of Singapore but it really was so boring and predictable! It could have been so much better as the story is interesting but the acting was wooden and stilted. I did not see the need for the constant distracting and overpowering background music, sometimes jazz, sometimes traditional Chinese.
It was just so typical of foreign productions filmed in Asia., that unnecessary need to 'highlight' all the Asian elements, the scenery, the clothes, the accent etc, but the whole story is lost along the way.
So sad that a series can be this bad
Wild Bill (2019)
Unexpectedly enjoyable!
I admit, this was my second attempt at watching Wild Bill - at first I thought it would be a typical American series, with rude teenage daughter and distraught father...that really put me off initially!
Then I tried watching it a second time and I was hooked!
Wild Bill has an interesting story line and very realistic characters especially DC Muriel played by Bronwyn James. I thought Rob Lowe would have been cashing in on his good looks but he was actually a very good and genuine actor.
Its a typical British detective series, not too gory and has some black humour and drama. The Lincolnshire farming landscape was something I am not familiar with, and it looked quite amazing.
I really hope there will be a second season, because Wild Bill does not deserve to end after just 6 series.
River (2015)
Just Excellent!!!
I watched this in 2019, 4 years after it was first released and was in awe. At first I could not quite understand the story line, but once I got the hang of it, I found it to be unusual and brilliant!! I binge watched the whole 6 episodes in one night - it was that good! I liked all the main characters in the series - Stellan Skarsgård, Nicola Walker, Adeel Akhtar and Lesley Manville complemented each other - all very believable and realistic. And I can now never listen to Tina Charles' "I Love To Love" without thinking of Nicola Walker and how her 'cheekbones explode when she smiles' ( as described by DI River)
Hoping they will come out with more episodes though I very much doubt it since it first aired 4 years ago.
Lovesick (2014)
Heartbreak and laughter - Love it!!!
I don't know why it took me so long to watch this movie - maybe because of its title and that the first scene started with the main character being told he has chlamydia. But it is actually a lovely comedy with lots of romance and subplots
Some of the characters are irritating but in a very nice way, you would wish they were your friends too. Somehow bits of the series really reminded me of the friends in Four Weddings and a Funeral.
I binge watched all 3 series and thoroughly enjoyed it (though I found the last series a bit lacking compared to the first 2.) I am waiting eagerly for season 4!
Lovesick is a heartwarming and tender and at the same time hilarious. Its romantic but not sappy - you just feel for the characters . Do watch it!!
Dix pour cent (2015)
My Favourite French TV Series!!
I absolutely loved this series especially for its Paris backdrop, the brilliant cast and the humour! The cast of 'actors' which changes every week is fabulous and its great that these famous actors can poke fun at themselves. Its a brilliant satire on the movie business - its sophisticated, funny and intelligent!! I absolutely recommend it and just can't wait for the next season!
Huge in France (2019)
Enjoyable Series
I was reluctant to watch this when i saw the introduction on Netflix's list of movies - it looked like it may be too typically 'Los Angeles' for me, but once i started watching, I realise I cannot stop. I am a French movie buff, and though i am slightly disappointed it does not have many French scenes, I must say its quite enjoyable.
