I enjoyed 'Talk To Me' and I love Sally Hawkins so I went into 'Bring Her Back' with high hopes. Sally Hawkins certainly did not disappoint. Her performance is astonishing. Her part and the entire script is quite brilliant but with a glaring flaw. Beyond all the astonishing and original events that take place during the film, a viewer is left wondering why things are happening, while characters are simply reacting to the horrific events. Because none of the characters are attempting to solve the mysterious motive of these events, there is no pull for the audience to experience the absolute horror depicted vicariously. So I was never at the edge of my seat and was disengaged throughout. The film generally was a near miss for me. I recommend it for the virtue of its inventive plot but it is simply not truly scary.
This one didn't work out. It was fun to watch to try to figure out where it went wrong. The action sequences were masterful but lacked the suspense necessary to truly make them thrilling. Is it a story about revenge? Is it about corruption? There was no way to edit the footage to tell a meaningful, coherent story. Three parents and their children. Drugs and money. Corrupt police. Asian gangs. This movie was a mess. I figured it would be problematic due to all the delays. They waisted a lot of money on this film. I was astonished by The Raid films, it seemed like Gareth Evans could do the impossible. The Apostle was interesting too. I hope his next one is another winner.
Humor, properly used can amplify the horrific experience. So many films botch this up and the mix subverts the intensity of the film. Here with The Coffee Table we experience the fine power of humor that stokes the raw power of the horror. Caye Casas has made an astonishing film, something unimaginable and brilliant.
Seeing a truly original and great movie leaves me exhilarated. The horror of this story, the shock and surprise of it. The way it plays out, the brilliant characterizations, there is truth to it all.
The actors do a fabulous job and all in only ten days of shooting. Casas masks the low budget and makes it an advantage. Unseen but implied visuals enhance the experience. Fine editing. I hope every film buff sees this movie. The advertised synopsis is misleading but how do you describe this masterpiece? See it as soon as you can.
