It's dark and delicious in a very anxiety inducing way. I've now watched it twice and feel there's still more to explore in the movie. Both, Defoe and Patterson offer strong and hypnotising performances. It's a good movie a 10/10 from me.
First, the movie is a well constructed look at isolation. It's use of atmosphere and dread is well executed for a debut feature. It made me feel empty and alone. Not in a bad way, more just wilfully entertained. Something else that is of huge interest. The pub that was used in the movie, The New Inn. I know of because an old friend of mine for many years lived in Uckfield the town near by. This pub has a very, VERY strange history. Rumours circulated many years back that one of the former landlords in the 1990's held weird orgies and dark rituals above the pub. This apparently contributed to the decline of the pub's standing in the village. In the end this landlord went under and suffered serious hallucinations and horrible hauntings. My friend also says that the art work on the walls that we see in the film are actually from this landlord! These images were already in the pub. It's probably all rumour. If you are ever visiting the area, drop in to the pub. It's in a village called Hadlow Down in East Sussex. According to my friend, the atmosphere is super weird. It's run down like you've never seen and the old timer locals are very stand-offish like they themselves are out of a movie like the punters in, American Werewolf in London!
Tightly woven gangland thriller. The pacing was upbeat. For a crime based gangster piece it also has soul. Really appreciate the angle this was aiming for even if it does miss the mark in some areas.
