Seriously, I've seen this film multiple times and I just can't find a flaw. I'm a drummer by hobby so obviously I was intrigued by this back in the 2014 Oscar film lineup more than the other nominees. I rented this from Netflix back when it was sending dvds (ah, good times, good times) and I got in huge trouble with my dad because he forbade R rated movies in his house, but did I feel guilty? Not in the slightest!
This movie is a miracle, a marvel! Thrilling tension building from just a rehearsal scene, spot on directing from Damien Chazelle, cinematography that really amplifies the intensity of the scrutiny that is Fletcher's gaze on his students.
J. K Simmons is a force of nature, we just never knew it until this movie. Someone who gets great respect and admiration from the college he teaches at. He's on the same level as someone at the top of any college.
Every new year when I look up upcoming movies, I specifically look up if Damien Chazelle had a new film in the works because if he does, I will mark it on my calendar and be seated for it. For a while he was on a roll, this and then two years later came out with La La Land.
Last year I got to see Whiplash in theaters because I wasn't able to when it came out because I was a teenager with no drivers license and my parents forbade I watch R rated movies. It wasn't a great theatrical experience but I loved seeing it and most of all; hearing it in theaters. You can really hear the slightest off tune or out of beat player in Fletcher's band that he's listening for like a fox. I guess that's why Whiplash swept all but Best Picture, which was definitely my pick for best picture.
I love this film from start to finish, it never gets old even after my thousandth viewing of this film. It's hands down the best film of 2014, and one of two Best Picture nominees that I actually remember to this day.
