Frustratingly avoidable situations turned into a chaos. Some horrible characters with antisocial traits are passed on for a "situational comedy"; and to the apologists, no, this is not British sense of humour.
This is an autobiographical and a classic Mindy Kaling show. Her main female character is a continuation from her previous works. Devi's character is interchangeable with Mindy Lahiri in the Mindy Project and Molly Patel in Late Night. The sense of humour and character traits remain the same because Mindy is playing Mindy. The cultural nuances offer a learning experience to those who are unfamiliar with Indian culture and Hindu religion but to those who have seen Mindy's other works, this offers the same formula and routine. Swapping the cultural context in a high-school drama is not original.
The film has a great cast and a few entertaining moments but no coherent story to tell and neither the conviction in the father-daughter duo's single minded pursuit of studying in a college in London. It seems like there are several individual performances stitched together in the edit to make it into a film. Kareena, Dimple and Pankaj were all casualty of that inconsistency in the story. This was a great casting coup let down by a poor script.
