I'm not into supernatural stories and a lot of flashbacks. This movie starts with an interesting story with a new lead detective and a B&E. Then it's downhill into supernatural rubbish. I never read the book/books. Lachlan Quarmby is speaking in an Irish brogue in his new detective job, he wouldn't have one as a detective from Portland, OR/ME unless he's from Ireland in his new life. That's on the director. Quarmby is Australian.
I can't believe that Hallmark bought this trilogy, I'm going to skip the three and watch some past classic Hallmark films. This isn't a romantic comedy like Hallmark is known for, this belongs on another network. I have no problem with the cast.

It's apparent from the plot that this Swedish crime drama wasn't going anyplace. A Swedish criminologist returns home from America to Sweden to attend her mother's funeral. The criminologist was the victim of a childhood kidnapping. While she's home for her mother's funeral, her best friend is killed and her daughter is kidnapped. It's full of cliched flashbacks of her own kidnapping plus the current kidnapping.
It lost me at episode 2. If the writers got paid by the episode then they made money on a plot that could have been tied up in two or three episodes. Poorly written, but well acted. I like Scandinavian crime dramas, but a Vivica Sten mystery is much better.

I'm not a fan of everything that Mark Gatiss has been in, like "Moonflower Murders" or the "Sherlock Holmes" series, but I did enjoy "Bookish". I've always been a fan of Polly Walker from "Enchanted April" to "Bridgerton", she's great in any role. And Connor Finch is a nice addition.
It's a very English detective series, something to relish like an Agatha Christie mystery. You just need a cup of tea and some biscuits and a comfortable chair. Trottie and Gabriel's lavender marriage wasn't that unique, it had a name. The episodes are different, not recycled plots that have been done before.
It's already been renewed for a 2nd season. I hope season 2 has 8 episodes instead of 6. It's a different take on the amateur detective genre and worth a second season.
