The Tender Bar (2021)
Unofficial Prequel to "Resurrecting the Champ".
I don't know if anyone out there is aware of J. R. Moehringer, but this is his early story and the film Resurrecting the Champ with Samuel L Jackson feels like a sequel. This film is a beautiful story of how a fatherless boy will piece together a father from the various older males he meets. Its a feel good film, not as tight has it could be in places. It feels as though Affleck simply resurrects an older Chuckie character from 'Good Will hunting'. Who didn't love Chuckie/Charlie? Also to see Christopher Lloyd on the screen was a wonderous bonus. A good film with good characters, kid JR is awesome, adolescent JR not so much.
The Evening Hour (2020)
I enjoyed it
Solid performances by all the actors except the cowboy bad guy. I was drawn to this film because of Cosmo Jarvis from the film "Calm with horses". Now to see him go from an Irish hoodlum to a deep talking, meth cooking red neck just shows this lads range. However the performance I was most struck by was the lead Cole, at first I thought he was quite weak but then the moment came where he speaks to his mum, well he doesn't speak, its just his facial expressions. This film isn't heavy in dialogue and plot, the plot plays out at a steady pace and its a typical good guy wrestling with his conscience. What is good about this film is what's not said. I usually switch films off after ten minutes if they are pants, but this one kept me going. What is new to me in this type of film is the plot plays out off camera and instead you watch the lead Cole tangle with its repercussions. I give it a 7, its worth a watch and I should imagine you either love it or hate it. Good indie film making.
Good Joe Bell (2020)
Dead mans shoes (gay son version)
If you watch a lot of movies you'll work out the plot pretty quickly but that doesn't mean it ruins the film. Its about a fathers guilt and his shot at redemption and the director as attempted to use a device to explain the fathers thoughts. That's it really, worth a watch.
The Carters Family Reunion (2021)
It's bad
Hey even bad actors have to eat. I struggled with it waiting for something but there was no flow.
Four Good Days (2020)
More films like this need to be made
After a dreadful 12 months of films this one was welcomed. Glenn Close and Mila Kunis are an interesting mix. The acting is excellent, don't listen to anyone who says it isn't. This isn't a story about drugs, nor is it a story about recovery, its a story about the moment where you're in between the two places. Still raging with withdrawals but trying to keep an eye on the future. The title of the film tells you this period of time. It was amazing to see Glenn Close play this role, she could of been anyone's mother. In fact I would say she plays the lead role, because its as much about her Journey as its is Mila's. I think the director and the writers have done well to capture that four days. This is true suburban suspense and it will leave you thinking about it for days after. Very close to reality and the absurdity of getting clean.
