I've watched this film several times now. Showing friends and family who've never heard of it. I wanted to check the reviews expecting similar positive reviews but sadly, there's a lot of the negatives, mostly from people who wouldn't have chosen this movie but won tickets to it. I LOVE Luc Besson films, so that certainly went in my favour and I like dogs but it isn't the dogs that make this film for me. It's Caleb. I was hooked to his retelling of his life's story and his passion and commitment to the role. Anyone who says anything negative about his acting frankly must enjoy a completely different cinema to me and my circle of family and friends. I actually liked the back and forth of the story, because I felt like I was taking the journey with him and feeling the things deeply because of it. Yes, some of it difficult to believe but if I wanted reality, I'd watch a documentary. I loved the honest relationship between him and the psychiatrist, and I loved that after everything he'd endured, he still thought kindly of others and wanted to help the community. I know we don't touch much on that in the film but reading between the lines, his life was dedicated to matching people and dogs for comfort and protection. It's a stark reminder of the evil in the world and that no matter how bad things can get, there's still good underneath. I wish it had better recognition but there are elements that will make it impossible to be a one size fits all film. If you dislike dogs, don't enjoy Lux Besson, the arts or drag, then it might not be for you but for the rest of you who may or may not have faced hard times and have a live and let live mentality, then ignore the bad reviews and enjoy. X.
