I enjoyed this film so much that I've watched it on DVD again and again. The casting director chose well: Adam Greaves-Neal was the perfect choice to play Jesus, combining childhood fun and innocence with gravity, humility and reverence for Almighty God. All of the child actors played their roles very well. Christian McKay was brilliant as Cleopas, bringing much-needed light relief to the whole film, while Jonathan Bailey & his courtiers showed how decadence leads to evil. Sean Bean & Clive Russell are justly famous actors, always worth watching in any film, David Bradley & David Burke made interesting rabbis, and Rory Keenan had an unusual take on the Devil (though I disapprove of demonizing blond males, as is popular nowadays). Sara Lazzaro & Agni Scott brought a lovely sense of biblical womanhood, modestly allowing their men to lead, which has all but disappeared from western civilization.
In my view, a good film is transformed into a great one by how much effort even the smaller and bit-part actors put into their roles, and this film illustrates that very clearly, though there are too many examples to list. I was also captivated by the cinematography, soundtrack, sets & costumes, transporting the viewer back in time, into another world. So never mind the nay-sayers clutching their pearls and shrieking about gnostic blasphemy--- just get the DVD and watch the film--- it's wonderful.
