I'm baffled as to why so many reviews here praise this film while admitting it makes no sense! Do you ENJOY sitting in a dark room for two and a half hours waiting for a story to emerge? I can handle a cerebral film or two, but I've GOT to be able to draw a theme from it!Without a story, this absurd film is just another Hollywood excuse to splash sex on the screen. Sorry Mr. Lynch, strangeness does NOT equal ingenuity.
This film's title is PERFECT. Eyes Wide Shut. I cannot think of anything more clever, intriguing or fitting. It plays off a common phrase yet makes us read it twice, it abbreviates the film's theme in three words, and it summons creepy, somewhat erotic images of sexual misbehavior.
This is a beautiful, funny, vivid film. It's even better than "Nuovo Cinema Paradiso" -- which it parallels but doesn't replicate. The story completes a full circle and had the theater beaming as the credits rolled. A hundred years after this story takes place, we're just as intrigued by flickering images in a dark theater.
