I have watched all four seasons of The Sinner. In the first, we are introduced to Harry Ambrose, a deeply troubled detective, who is seeking the why behind a sudden violent death.
He gets there by seeking to understand the murderer. That is his method and it follows through the entire series. He tells those that he is engaging that he is not judging, but that is a dubious distinction.
Season three is a real strange one with overtones of Hitchcock's Rope. I see that many did not like it. It does put Harry in strange company and circumstances.
Season four is a redemption from this, and set away from New York. France Farmer is in this one, and should not be missed.
Is Harry a hero or someone who obsesses about a case and will not quit? Watch and see what you think.
We are all flawed human beings walking through the world. Make a difference!

I went to watch this series for Toni Collette, who does not disappoint. The first episode leads you down potential rabbitholes and introduces, partially, the characters.
The story revolves around actions 30 years before and some of the trauma that was inflicted. The other lead, who is the 30 year old daughter of Toni's character works hard and sometimes in scary ways to figure out what is going on.
I thought this was well done, and enjoyed it. Curveballs abound.
Watch this to see how the plot unfolds and who is the real protagonist. It is surprising as it moves forward.
Looks like there is enough left at the end for a second season, but I doubt that the makers want to do this. It stands on its own as series with flawed and interesting characters.

I watched this over about three nights. The story was compelling, but the characters kept me going.
Starting with a shooting that kills on Scottish police officer and wounds two more, the show moves towards a woman prosecutor ( I will use US terms, since the series does that rather than all specific Scottish ones) who is hard charging and maybe too sure of herself.
Then the ride begins, one officer, Morck, returns to duty. He is also hard-charging, but the shooting has affected him. He is given an assignment to open and solve cold cases and a room in the basement that was a locker room, with showers and urinals.
Slowly, a team coalesces around this not un-entirely likable detective (think House without the vicodin). A traumatized woman officer who wants to return to the field, a refugee Syrian with a dark past and a certain set of skills. We find out that Morck has a son, a roommate, and stays in contact with his paralyzed partner.
This context makes the show more enjoyable because there are no kumbaya moments, but a determination to prove themselves. And everyone contributes.
Well worth the watch! No Scotch required.
