The movie version of Elizabeth Goudge's classic is just beautiful. The plot involves a difficult, impossibly painful scenario, but as with many of Goudge's stories, there is an otherworldly, spiritual element that allows the very human, earthy characters to rise to supernatural virtue. The examples of forgiveness and reconciliation in this story will seem too good to be true to our often faithless 21st century culture. Humanly speaking, they are too good to be true in any age. But nothing is impossible to those who have faith, and the beauty of this particular story is that all comes right in the end only when the ugly truth comes out. Technically, it is a expertly made movie with superb acting. The film is a beautiful setting for this gem of a story.
