As a sci-fi AND linguistics nerd, I thought this movie would be perfect for me, especially after some people I know absolutely loved it. Honestly, I'm quite disappointed. The premise is really interesting, opening to new possibilities in sci-fi and languages together, but the execution was so slow and so simplistic. The whole language thing is resolved super quickly without going into particulars and without being particularly smart even though they could have. The atmosphere is extremely dark and the movie takes itself too seriously. Most of the movie seems to be concentrated on personal drama rather than smart linguistics and politics, as it should have been. The personal drama felt distant too, without ever building some real attachment to the only story present - Amy adams'. It's like the movie can't decide if it's a smart sci-fi or a depressing melodrama, and it ends up failing in both. I'm really sorry because the premise is really interesting and I really wanted to like it. I will give some stars because of the interesting premise, but that's all.
