Slow, tedious, full of cliches, this movie is pure amateurism from a former good screen writer and director.
That is the most interesting thing to say about the movie.
The now repetitive Almodovar aesthetic art direction adds to the monotony of the film.
Dialogs are robotic and mostly lifeless. The adaptation of the book appears to be the work of a simpleton.
The film is such a bore that it stings. With such an interesting theme, one wonders why any viewers would rate this as a worthwhile movie. They might want to make others suffer their own penance.
I remember now the Pascal-Hawke short film and realize Almodovar's downward slope might be years in the making.
Bad.

One can't be to irrespecutful of such and outstanding career but certainly the actor is to say the least, a big smudge on an otherwise great story.
The parodical makeup and acting are so annoying (and not in the way intended). It bombs the film and I kept having this impulse to pull the nuisance out of my way while trying to watch the rest.
Hanks himself seems to be bullying his character as a child would: impersonating other kids wryly as to bother them.
There are two movies here: one stared by a great actor giving a great performance and one with an actor in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Too bad the movie is almost a must see. So until Ai does something about it, you'll have to eat a toad to get the lobster.
(I read this minute the man got his first Razzie award from playing C. Parker. )
So much for insights, ha, ha.
8/10.
