  • First half during lunch, 2nd half while doing the dishes (Y)

It was heartwarming to listen to Bengali after a longtime. Aap Jaisa Koi, at least the first half was surprisingly good despite being a Sanskari version of Rocky Aur Rani ki Prem Kahani. Madhavan and Fatima had great chemistry.

For a change, it was refreshing to watch something that wasn't mindless action from Bollywood, but good lord the plot twist was so unnecessary and the ending felt too convenient. What should have been a breezy movie got derailed in the process of trying too hard to be preachy for the sake of it.

Sit down and watch the first half as you have your lunch, let the 2nd half run in the background when you're doing the dishes after lunch.

  • An example of why you're missing out if subtitles bother you.

Allow me to recommend one of the best heist films that you may have never heard of.

Nine Queens released ~ 25 years ago and depending on which/how many heist films you've watched over the years, you might be able to predict the plot in a few different ways, but despite what your prediction is, the film will manage to surprise you even after 2.5 decades since its release.

The one and only Ricardo Darin is in it and it's a crime genre movie. For some, that's all they need to bump this up the watchlist. For the rest, have you ever watched a film with no soundtrack and still feels intense? This is one of them.

There's a moment in the film that makes you go "Oooh no, these poor guys....! All that hard work....gone to waste!" And then you catch yourself because they're the bad guys but that's just how well the film is written - it makes you care for the bad guys. Care - because it's set in ~2000 Argentina, a time period when their economy was in shambles. The film was a foreshadowing of things to come in ARG in a couple years' time in real life.

The politics and the economics kept aside, if you're in for a GOOD movie regardless of when it was released, this one should totally be on your list. You will NOT be disappointed.

  • If you liked Broadchurch, you'll like Dept Q.

Without going into details, all I can say is, if you liked Broadchurch, you'll like Dept Q, the show.

If you prefer and enjoy reading books, check out "The Keeper of Lost Causes", the first in a Dept Q series by crime-fiction author Jussi Adler-Olsen. If you prefer watching a film instead, check out the Danish film of the same name. And surprisingly, if you prefer a longer, detailed version of the film, check out the tv show Dept Q, set in Scotland, adapted in English.

I haven't read the book, but I heard of the show and I thought, I might as well check out the film because I didn't want to spend 9 hours on a story when when I can wrap in up in 1.5 hours and it was a fairly decent movie. Not mind-blowing, but certainly worth a watch. And then I thought, why not let the show run in the background while I do chores, but surprisingly, the show was good too! Folks online said that the show felt more like a book...and I think I can understand the comment.

To me, the show was the book that I compared to the movie and surprisingly had a good time with both the versions; and I haven't even read the actual book. I don't remember the last time a book and a movie and a show as well in this case were all good and received praise.

Start with the show, and if you like it, consider watching the movie - which is surprisingly different from the show, and from the movie. If you prefer reading, consider reading! You're in for a decent time regardless.
