Would have been much better as a short in the BBC Christmas ghost story type tradition.. 'the signal man' 'whistle and i'll come to you' 'a warning to the curious etc.. 40 mins would be enough to tell this tale... its too long and drawn out, the dialogue is hard to hear and its neither shocking nor exhilarating, its just very boring and disappointing to the point where i just wanted it to end... that said i had high hopes for this film given the positive reviews and maybe that's where the disappointment comes from... the lighthouse is a generous a 5/10 and could and should have been so much better...
Oh my oh my... what have we here? This is your classic emperors new clothes art house nonsense.. its nothing more then an average hitchcock mystery style film with lots of unrelated lynch strangeness, that said its certainly not completely dire, some of its quite interesting but the way many on here lap it up as a work of genius is baffling...i'm sure if lynch had thrown in a scene of a giant frog on a skateboard crossing the humber bridge or a pumpkin in the middle of the road as a truck approaches they would find a way to describe it as all deep and meaningful and genius... i personally give it 5/10 because parts of it are quite interesting but a lot of it is simply twaddle and art for arts sake so to speak...
Chanced upon a season 1 bluray in a charity shop for 50p, wasn't expecting much as the original das boot in all its different versions and lengths is something of a master piece... i stuck with this namesake through 3 episodes even though it was all very one dimensional soap opera stuff in the main with its cardboard cut out characters, the captain doing his difficult job by the book, the slimy gestapo officer who's having moments of conscience, the commie female resistance leader who golly gosh would you believe it likes girls... and that's where i gave up and hit the eject button... who writes this garbage... will it turn out that the submarine fly's a rainbow flag at some point or a rupaul type new crew member enlists....
