I have been waiting for this drama for a while. And it didn't disappoint me. This is the one of favourite drama of 2024. And this year (2024) most of the CDrama had sad ending but......
This drama has a GREAT STORYLINE, BEAUTIFUL CINEMATOGRAPHY, the calmness and elegant storytelling, soft color grading, aesthetically pleasing camera angles, good choice of music, and even the strength of each character is very satisfying. What stands out the most is the smart female character who doesn't just wait to be protected by the male lead but can also protect him in return, a truly well-written character.
The male lead is absolutely captivating. The expressions he shows make you both want to protect him and be protected by him at the same time. And the couple in this drama is so adorable, their chemistry is sizzling! His jealousy and His wide smile when he's proud of Dou Zhou is damn cute, He not only respects her choice but even expands her capacity to choose, He is the greenest green frorest. They've already given me butterflies, their relationship before and after fujin furen era. And I can't wait to see what actions they'll take to solve the problems in the future.
The story gets crazier and crazier, with a plot that keeps getting better and not a single scene wasted. The way the director showcases each character's development is excellent. DZ's coolness when she's angry is truly mesmerizing; her brilliance in handling problems never disappointed.

This drama was just addictive! The plot had the right dose of rom-com, heartwarming gestures, witty dialogues and action.
Hyun Bin was just honest and honorable and kind and perfect. It was so refreshing to see Son Ye Jin step out of her usual Melodrama set-ups and play a badass, funny heiress. She nailed this role. I loved what she was wearing in North Korea. I also loved the fact that she did not wear any make-up in her North Korea scenes.
In fact, one of the biggest charms of this drama lie in the fact that the writer tried to subvert the usual norms. Son Ye Jin played a heiress (not the typical, poor, melo damsel-in-distress, possibly dying) and Hyun Bin played a sweet guy (unlike his usual jerk characters). Also, love the fact that the girl was from South and the guy from North usually it is the other way around, engendering the North as the poor, weak female and the South as the strong, dominating male. Also the fact that the woman was the one who had the played the field and had experiences with relationships, while the guy was innocent and sweet. All this breathed life and freshness into the drama.
The second leads were great. So happy to see Seo Ji Hye landing a lead role. She is so deserving. Seo Dan was not a nasty second lead. She was so nice beneath all that hard exterior. Hyun Bin's subordinates were so awesome. My favorite was the one who loved Choi Ji Woo and Korean dramas but I loved all of them really. The maknae was so adorable! The cameos were great. The rest of the supporting cast was awesome. I loved North Korean ahjummas. They remind me of Reply 1988. Seo Dan's mother and uncle were awesome
The OST was perfect! I already want to watch it again. The chemistry was sooo good
Edit: I Re-watched is drama for 8th time. I will again....

Family by Choice is a heartwarming drama that beautifully explores the theme of chosen family. The story revolves around three individuals who come together, each carrying their own past wounds, and through their shared journey, they begin to heal. As an adaptation of the popular Chinese drama 'Go Ahead,' Family by Choice adds its own charm to the narrative, making it a unique experience.
The storytelling is light and relaxing, yet it tugs at your heartstrings with serious topics like abandonment, depression, trauma, and loss. The pacing is fast enough to keep you engaged without feeling rushed, allowing you to enjoy each character's journey step by step while avoiding any drag. The acting is undoubtedly good, and the dialogue is well thought out, relatable, and, of course, heartwarming and emotional.
Overall, Family by Choice is a great drama.
