Ouch. This movie really hit me close to home.
Joachim Trier once again has crafted a masterful character study tale about family, healing, and the dramatic elements between the dynamics of conflict and characters. Trier's direction on the writing, the setting, the characters and the atmosphere feels genuinely raw realistic and portraited with every dose of naturalist, faithfulness, and emotional weight. He understands how people are act, their personalities and how human connections work, which allows the movie to bring out the light and realistic nature successfully.
With the great color presentation, camerawork, atmosphere and direction, the narrative is really strong. The writing offers great character moments, emotional connections, and well-crafted dialogue between the characters. There are some dialogue pieces that, as of writing this, are still grained and burned into my memory. Alongside with the wonderful performances from the cast members.
I really love the usages of how sound plays in, the themes that are explored, and the established setting and environment that Trier captures. Each felt purposeful without being over the top, and the emotional barrier weight remains reflective and powerful.
Having gotten lots of buzz from Cannes, I can safetly say this is one of the best movies of 2025.

Indian cinema is interesting because I'm not really a fan of the traditional Bollywood genre. But anytime when Indie Indian art house movies come to light, I'm very intrigued to check them out.
Neeraj Ghaywan captures a heartbreaking and warming tale about friendship, the struggles of the caste system and the ongoing conflicts between the culture and barriers the characters are established in. Ghaywan's previous movie Masaan was pretty good and with this new movie, he continues to capture the atmosphere, and the realistic nature of the societal environment of India and it's political working class setting perfectly. Ghaywan portray of the two main characters was interesting as the characters are well-written and engaging to observe. As if you are wanting to see what their struggles, goals and compassion they are wanting to succeed towards. To top it off, the performances are pretty good as the chemistry and charm between the two leads were emotional and engaging.
Alongside with the good camerawork, production, colors and the sound designs, the narrative offers some interesting concepts and moments throughout. While at times, some of the writing does feel a bit cliched and certain emotional aspects does lean a little too much towards some of the cheesy aspects about Indian cinema. The majority of its dialogue and emotional weight remains successful.
I do enjoy some of the social class themes and a good tale about friendship as it's always interesting to observe, when it's done right of course. Overall, it's a good story and emotional to observe.

June Squibb provides a wonderful, sweet and touching performance about a elderly woman embracing new connections and friendship, in a otherwise, cliched and predictable story and structure.
Throughout, being Scarlett Johansson's debut directing, Johansson's direction feels average as her direction on the atmosphere, writing and style feels unspecial, but maintain it's normality without any issues. With the good production and solid camera work, Johansson does understand how to pull the strings on emotions as there are some solid emotional conversations, chemistry and charm between the characters and performances. Which does offer some sweet moments from June.
As mentioned, June's performance was wonderful as she offers her character to bring out into the light and shine. While the other performances are good, the characters don't feel very fleshed out at times, which made them not particularly engaging or as interesting as Johansson would have liked. Alongside with the cliched narrative, many of the style and choices were pretty cheesy and predictable. If you have seen movies like this before, then you know what will come next without a doubt.
Despite the cliche and predictable style, the general experience was still decent because of June's charmful performance and dialogue energy was able to convey the emotions successfully. She was the absolute best part of this movie. Overall, it isn't something I would see again quickly but it's decently heartwarming.
