  • Good intentions, failed execution

The show undeniably sheds light on crucial societal issues, particularly the persistent mistreatment of women; for example, it exposes the harsh reality of how capable, deserving women are routinely overlooked for promotions in favor of unqualified men. It also highlights other glaring injustices imposed on girls and women that remain largely unchanged despite over a century of so-called progress since women gained the right to vote. However, the exaggerated nature of the characters makes them difficult to watch, as they reinforce the damaging and outdated stereotype of women as "hysterical." Given the current political climate, where the devaluation of women and the erosion of their rights are alarmingly on the rise, I worry that the show's message is too subtle. Instead of empowering women and educating society on the difficult realities they face, it risks reinforcing the very oppression it seeks to challenge.

  • Winner selection had little to do with the competition

"Finding Mr. Christmas" appeared more as a reality entertainment show rather than a genuine competition or audition. While the extent of scripting in reality TV is often unclear, it's evident that editing plays a significant role in shaping the narrative around contestants. I found some of the editorial choices rather curious. Initially, none of the contestants stood out as particularly appealing, and the final selection seemed to align closely with traditional Hallmark values and attitudes. Certain individuals, despite excelling in the challenges and demonstrating considerable talent, were unlikely to be considered as viable winners. I suppose it is commendable that the show included a diverse group of candidates, it seemed that some individuals were primarily included to fulfill a token representation rather than being given a fair opportunity to succeed based on merit.

  • Pretend it's a school play

This was a little hard to watch mostly due to the male lead, but do keep in mind it is Moreland's very first acting job. To enjoy it at all, watch the movie with the mindset of a loving mom watching a school play. No one starts out an expert and those who watched Finding Mr. Christmas know that "skill" was not what they were rewarding. Given that the prize was a leading role though, they really should have given him acting lessons before making this movie. Hopefully, he'll seek out lessons on his own and, if he chooses to stay in show biz, he'll improve. The dogs were cute. The script needed work (and some expert consultants), but, well, it's Hallmark.
