  • Love it! When queer women meet the Coen brothers!

Watched it with my girlfriend on a lazy weekend. Had so much fun with this!!! We need more lesbian roadtrip buddy comedies!! It is unapologetically queer and quirky indeed. Happy to see queer women being represented more on screen. I hope people won't be discouraged by the rating and haters.

Very simple plot and concept. Campy, trippy, and over the top. Great casting too as Jamie and Marianne look great together.

Always loved the Coen brothers and was not disappointed at all by Drive-Away Dolls at all. This movie is quite different from their previous works. Would recommend if you want a light watch and a good laugh.

  • Are you offended?

It's interesting to see the different opinions from the comment sections. I saw someone made a comment and it goes something like "yes women are being objectified but they are also doing so on their own accord..."and they (sorry to assume but i guess there is 89% chances that they are a cis-gender heterosexual man) used examples if instagram influencer and models...

Utterly speechless, why so defensive? This is a desperate try to distract people and themselves from the actual issues at the core of this film which is extremely poignant. If we are talking about male gaze, and the objectification of men toward women, we are talking about an oppressive troupe which put women in a passive position, dehumanizing women, ignoring their subjectivity and voices while fragmenting their bodies, privileging the male gaze. Influencers and models are a different issue here, what they suggest that is women dont have autonomy and sense to empower themselves by displaying and posing their bodies on sns in their own way. Cuz whatever we do is to cater your gaze and perpetuate male oppression right?

Women have the freedom to choose whatever the way the want to celebrate and display their bodies, its about being comfortable in one's own skin.

And also why not think of why women feel the need sometimes to cater or as they suggest perpetuate the objectification? Its patriarchal pedagogy and propaganda which a lot of us have to unlearn. Its structural, still pinpointing to the cultural of female objectification. Stop being defensive, look inward. Or else you are not getting any point of this documentary.

  • Yes Eugene is important, so is Aileen Mioko.

I would recommend anyone who is interested or have already watched this film to read this article by Kyoto Journal.

The article is titled: Documenting Minamata with W. Eugene Smith: An Interview with Kyoto Activist Aileen Mioko Smith

Aside from the portrayal of Minamata disease, I think the film could have given some more space &thoughts to the character of Aileen. She is an incredible woman whom i truly admire and respect, i hope her role in the Minamata story will not be forgotten and completely overshadowed by that of Gene. Indeed, Johnny Depp is the big star here and Gene is the legendary photographer that deserves attention and recognition. However, it is easy for women to be outshined by their male counterparts in many narratives and discourses. I dont even need to explain why and how is that here.

Anyway, all i try to say is.

Don't ever forget people in Minamata, people who are suffering from social injustice all over the world, Aileen Mioko and Eugene.
