There's a style where we get drawn into the lives of the gangsters which may have been around pre Sopranos but it's definitely a thing since. This series does that better than most and I was so hooked by the end of series 1 I had a late night finishing the series off. Series 2 was equally gripping but I started to read the twists and turns. I'm now on episode 6 of series 3 and it's like I could have written it. Obviously it's not that familiar but I'm starting to see the next "oh no" moment from a couple of blocks away. And the sex! Never one to mind a bit of T & A but there's a growing detachment from the dialogue to the bump and grind. Shame really because the acting is class.
I worked in N Africa c45yrs ago and can testify to its rawness. Truly magnificent at times and brutal at others. A lot of time has passed since then but there are many echoes here and despite meeting/knowing many lovely people in N Africa, more notably Nigeria, there were many others lying in wait ready to take advantage of any weakness and the way the vulnerable are preyed on here is absolutely credible. The style of filming and acting is different to European styles but no less effective, some would say it maybe touches on the naive at times, but I found the series frightening, with danger never too far away. Give it a go.
