Okay, the plot is nonsensical...that's fine. (There was no need for a secretive Nixon aid to recruit a hotshot ad/PR person to promote the moonshot - it was happening from day one and in the open.) And of course there are just ridiculous plot holes and blatant illogical things throughout. No, the biggest problem is that there is no spark between Scarlet Johannesburg and Channing Tatum. Though I can't see how any actress could spark with the lump of wood that Is Tatum - why does he keep getting these roles? (He was just as bad in another recent movie with with Sandra Bullock - same result.) Did like Woody Harrelson though - he turns up in so many movies and is always good. He seems to be very smart and always takes roles that work for him, big and small.
This is basically the original Alien movie without any of the drama, structure, acting, directing or sheer terror of the original. In fact it makes the fourth movie look almost okay by comparison. There seems to be this idea today that if you have the ability to spend lots of money on sets and special effects, you should use them. It's a mistake. The beauty of the original was the simplicity of the structure, the high level of the cast, and the understanding that the things that make a movie scary is not what you show but what you don't. The original did it all brilliantly, but this reboot misses the mark by always, always doing and showing more. But of course, it's all been set up for the next movie and - yes - in exactly the same way as the original.
Script is a mess. Narrative all over the place. Also think they cast the wrong Ryan. I suspect Ryan Reynolds would have been far better for the part and added a lot of the charm and humour that is missing, because Ryan Gosling seems to have none of what is needed and there is no chemistry between him and Emily Blunt. Maybe that's unfair, because it's unlikely any actor could have saved this shemozzle. Perhaps it got better in the second half, but I doubt it. I will now write the same word over and over and over to get to the required word count. Average, average, average, average, actually not very good.
