It's a cheesy 90s as you can get type of movie. Filled with 90s music, pop culture references lots and lots of cheesy one liners and cheesy characters. The cgi while being very charismatic has somewhat aged. But my god Jim Carey shines so well in this, this is truly Jim Carey at his strongest. He goes fully cartoon it relies on primarily physical and random comedy and works perfectly, Jim Carey was literally built for this role. The comedy works even better because the characters act like the mask is so normal which is such a hilarious contrast lmao. The Stanley stuff isn't quite as good, it's a lot more grounded which makes you miss the insane mask stuff a little bit. That being said it's definitely needed and I think without it the movie would be much much weaker, we need to like Stanley and want to see him succeed and the movie does that perfectly with the Stanley scenes. Also milo is genuinely one of the best dog actors in film history, he is amazing and is almost as enjoyable as the mask himself.
It's an okay film, but I wouldn't recommend it. The characters aren't overly interesting and a lot of them are just straight up annoying and awful people, but I do prefer them to the second films as they're at least somewhat interesting. This film is also slightly more entertaining than the second but that's likely just because I have a soft spot for found footage style movies. Like the second movie the biggest issue with this is it's just not scary. The scenario is somewhat horrifying (I'll be it incredibly over the top) but outside of a couple scenes it doesn't feel horrifying and most importantly it never once feels tense. While I do love the found footage filming it doesn't make up for the lack of anything scary and overall I just can't recommend this.
I sadly just didn't like this film despite all its improvements. The acting is much better in this film and I think the premise is a lot more interesting as characters have way more to do and there's an active goal they're working towards, meanwhile in the first film they're mostly just waiting. That being said I couldn't get behind it, it's nowhere near as tense or scary as the first. I also personally didn't care about a single character in this despite their decent acting, which is something I can't say about the first. All the deaths in this film also feel incredibly stupid and kind of drag the film down even more for me. The cinematography also isn't nearly as interesting and the editing feels cheap. My biggest issue with this movie though is just how boring it is due to the lack of interesting characters and tension.
