Gender: In the John le Carré novel, the intelligence officer who recruits Jonathan Pine is a man named Leonard Burr. For the TV adaptation, director Susanne Bier and the producers decided to make the character a woman, Angela Burr, to avoid a predominantly white male-driven cast.
