A rare Martial Arts movie thats animated! Ill never say no to that!
This movie showcases a very interesting topic - the reputation that Kung Fu has in the modern day and it provides a surprisingly introspective view that sympathizes with traditional martial arts but also provides honest criticism to it.
Although the main character's progression from total novice to pro fighter is laughably quick, let alone his insanely plot convenient iron chin, the movie's focus on combat sports and traditional martial arts are far more universally appealing than lion dancing, so I was still hooked throughout.
The movie is still really charming and animated exceptionally well. It felt like a large step up from the first film.

By far the best aspect of this movie is its animation quality. Very impressive for Chinese animation. Apparently some people took issue with the character designs? I think its very expressive and unique. It bordered the perfect line between looking photorealistic and uncanny valley, making sure to make the characters look just cartoony enough as to not look disturbing - a breath of fresh air from the current overly-cute American 3D animation aesthetic.
The first act, unfortunately, follows the generic plot of "meek underdog wants to pursue his dream and trains hard to achieve it," with the only real unique aspect being the (ovbious) Chinese setting and the main characters' passion being lion dancing, otherwise you've seen this movie a million different times elsewhere.
It takes roughly an hour for anything left field to happen in the movie, with the main character Gyun's father going into a coma and him having to give up his dream to work and provide for his family. I just wished it had happened a little earlier.
Overall, great animation and a good third act payoff, but the plot could have been tighter. Beyond that and a particularly odd smelly feet joke, this movie is fine.
