I am proud to say that A24 has put out yet another Horror classic in the making! X is a film that follows a group of youths in their prime looking for stardom through an adult film shoot in 1970s Texas. When they pay off an oblivious elderly couple in order to film using a cabin (and a barn) on their property, things aren't what they seem and their big dreams of stardom quickly become their biggest Nightmare! Every shot in this film has meaning, every character is memorable, and its overall atmosphere is eerie enough to make even the most hardcore of horror fans skin crawl. X is a film that I may be able to confidently say is the scariest horror film in 2022. While obviously I can't say this for certain until the end of the year this films sound design combined with its clearly thought out shots alone, built this tension that simply has to be experienced for one to understand what I mean! While X may not be for everyone (especially the faint hearted) if you're into disturbing straight up horror this film delivers and then some. X is an incredible film for anybody who is looking for an eerie horror film with gripping realism that will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout its runtime, I know I was!
Life After Beth is one of those films that you can throw on in the background if you're simply looking to pass some time and still manage to get a chuckle or even a tear out of it. Aubrey Plaza (as well as the rest of the cast) is clearly having a blast with their roles and that simply flows through the audience making Life After Beth a pretty enjoyable experience! It's different and brings something new to the now everyday zombie film that we have all come to expect from the horror subgenre. Life After Beth isn't a blockbuster classic and it knows it, as the viewer you should simply turn off our brain and enjoy the amounts of fun that Life After Beth has to offer as the crazy film that it is!
Im not sure who this was for but it definitely wasn't me.. Studio 666 follows the story of beloved band The Foo Fighters as they attempt to record a unique 10th album for their record label. In order to do this they use an old house which happens to be haunted as their recording grounds. This film was one I through on with low expectations from the beginning, I should've had them lower. Im not sure if Studio 666 was made for Horror fans, Foo Fighter Fans, or music fans but with me being all three of those I found slim to no enjoyment from this. With that being said, who this for is genuinely a difficult question for me to answer. Sure, the film knows how ridiculous it's premise is however all this does is leads to some very forced humor which never really lands.. After sitting through this mess, all I can really say as a last note is that maybe the Foo Fighters should stick to music and music only.
