  • yet another Battle Royale

But Battle Royale did come in another context and a life time ago and it meant something. This is fake and stereotypical to the max. I can watch only on fast forward. Everyone has a backstory, some tear jerky some plain stupid. In movie demographics are pretty much the audience demographics. Logic and detective work are close to null, accent is put on gorish and semi violent interactions. Some characters appear semi inteligent. There is a feel of manga and/or game to it - no real depth - just another level and 5 more characters.

I am waching it basically to see with what they come in terms of games - though most games are not clearly defined.

  • Romanian Casablanca + Salaire de la peur

With a little bit of more action and the natural (for 1959) propaganda message, Valurile Dunarii is one of the first masterpieces of Liviu Ciulei. If you ignore the propaganda part - the fearful soldiers who jump over the lines into the machine guns and the final scene demonstration, this film is only a love story in times of war. This goes a little between 'Salaire de la peur' with Yves Montand and 'Casablanca' as they go with a barge of ammunition on a mined Danube.

The same black atmosphere as in "Padurea spînzuratilor". It was the acting debut for Irina Petrescu (very nice :) ). I saw this film tonight on TV and it has some problems with the sound. Good and solid acting by Liviu Ciulei itself - a complex character who loves in times of war, a rough person but also a survivor.

======= Spoilers ====== A very powerful scene is when Toma dives to push the mine - gets me thrills when I think about it.

  • we should see something new on silver screen!

Terminus Paradis was exceptional, but "Niki ardelean" comes too late. We already have enough of this and we want something new.

Big directors should have no problems seeing beyond their time, not behind. Why people see Romania only as a postrevolutionary country?

We are just born not reincarnated, and nobody gives a s**t anymore about old times. Most people dont remember or dont want to remember, and the new generation of movie consumers dont understand a bit. This should be the first day of romanian movie not the final song - priveghi! Maybe younger directors should make the move.

  • Super

Nice movie...good philosophy...just enjoy life and live your experiences...follow your heart. Very nice music

It's a good movie to watch but perhaps many too square people wont understand a bit ...in that case you may prefer Terminator.
