Update: After the series got unbearably woke in Season 3 and there was at least one major plot hole unrelated to the wokefying of the show, I am amending my review.
Science fiction and alternate history are two of my favorite genres of fiction and when FAM sticks to these things it does them very well. The production quality is excellent and the acting overall is good enough to be convincing.
However, there is a tendency, especially in season 2, to veer off into what we call Soap Opera Drama. It's the kind of drama that most often is completely unnecessary and adds absolutely nothing to the plot. Admittedly, I tend to skip all the scenes with any of that stuff. So far in season 3 I haven't been skipping much and I'd say that season 3 is the best season so far, especially if you've watched much of season 1 or season 2.
One thing -- there is complaints about "woke" elements in this show and while I will acknowledge there definitely is some of that in this show, it's usually not overwhelming or unbearably preachy and most of the main characters are actually pretty well designed from a writing perspective
In summary, if you are like me and love science fiction/alternate history action, the action in this show is enough and done well enough to keep me watching it even though the show really does get bogged down by soap opera level drama at times.
If I was making a tier list of my favorite shows FAM would get a solid "B" tier rating. It's no Stargate SG-1 but it sure is better than Ascension or The Hundred that much is clear.
9/10 for action
0/10 for drama.
FINAL CONCLUSION: 5/10 Do Not Recommend.

This is one of those movies in the "so cheesy it's almost good" category
Not good enough to recommend anyone pay any money for, mind you, but it's good fun if you can get it free on a streaming service like Amazon Prime.
By far the worst, most cheesy special effects I've seen in a film made after 2000
The whole movie is just plain cheesy

This is a great sci-fi movie that's realistic enough to not be weighed down by being unrealistic or ridiculous in that way.
The acting and plot are great. The story is engaging, and Matt Damon does a great job in playing a character that everyone is trying to save (he always seems to be playing a character that everyone is trying to save or everyone is trying to kill)
One thing that I do think weighs this movie down, and why it's a 9/10 and not a 10/10, is all the swearing. I can understand some swearing here and there, but it does get to a point in the Martian that the swearing feels gratuitous and can detract a bit to a lot from the viewing experience depending on how much you do or don't mind swearing in movies.
Other than that I'd say the movie is fairly accurate to the book, and it's extremely well done, and is a definite must watch if you like it when movies at least try to put a good effort into being as realistic as possible.
9/10 would recommend.
