  • Original, suspenseful, amusing, beautiful and food for thought!

Roosters is a fascinating pilot for an intended soap-style TV series, with the potential for endless twists, back story, and character and relationship developments. It also "reads", to me, similar to a based-on-comic book show, with unique distinct scenes and info hints from conversation and demeanor of the fabulous actors.

The filmmaker explains his intent at the end of this pilot, that its low-tech effects, made-for-TV likeness comes from his fondness for the old Dark Shadows.

Yes, what is going on with this rural secret society may be disturbing, the way Texas Chainsaw is, but any unspeakable acts are not graphically illustrated or gory onscreen, it is more the thought that counts. And It's in beautifully tonal black and white, like, old movie silver screen colors. So it's not unwatchably scary or unsettling, the violence and corruption is just the context and environment for the characters.

The characters are so beautifully acted and a hint at their story and motivations comes through their skin almost, they did such a great job of living their parts. I can't wait to see more about how Sonny handles her mysterious and gorgeous new project Travis, who perfectly portrays a duality of light charm and darkness which seems almost hypnotically or robotically imposed on him. I can't wait for more from Sissy the bartender who knows this town too well, and from Charles the butler who knows how to run the thing; the wicked Mayor who so perfectly delivers the classic bad-guy-ego-in-charge trope that he's welcome as almost light-hearted relief from the earnestness of the young and doomed (which is very soap-y!). Sonny's brother Sam is truly a Gary Cooper movie star, and as a viewer I had faith in him as the wise narrator. Travis's ghostly mother Elenore is a nostalgic glow and his father, a ghost with a sly sense of humor and effects.

Don't miss the fascinating interviews with the cast at the conclusion of this pilot. I have to add my own wondering about what is going on. I note that the director's most recent project before Roosters, The Hid, also opened with a mother protecting her son from a corrupt male hierarchy. Could this be a warning to embrace the feminine side, as demonstrated in Roosters' brutal male society run amok? The women in Roosters seem to have a hidden strength or motive, even as they may appear to be bystanders or victims of the society. I can't wait for the ongoing serial of surprises.

  • So bad. Pretty effects.

I don't know if I can even watch the whole thing, this is so bad. I don't know if it's just that poorly written that every actor seems so awful. It is so bad it comes across as a b movie but without any charm or humor. Lopez character is screechy and off putting. The space effects are pretty though. I have to say I just can't drum up any interest in what is going to happen. I don't like to pan movies but as a sci fan I'm just so disappointed. Hsp hooes it's a fresh alternative to terminator movies but sadly, it's not. Unwatchable. I keep waiting to see. I really can only stand the robots voices in this They are much better than j lo is and I am rooting for extinction of the human race frankly.
