This slow-moving portrait of a family has the power the teach us all many lessons about life. It can show us that we are not that different from any other typical family anywhere else in the world. That is the power of cinema, and the power of subtitles! These tools can bring us all together in our shared experience as we hurtle through space on this ball we call home. Indeed, I am sure I will watch this piece again as it was such a powerful and moving picture, but when I see it again I am sure I will see a different film entirely, one informed by the things I will be going through at the time, the things that are going on in my life and the things that are on my mind, and all the experiences I will have had between now and then, both good and bad. Stark realism and terrific acting can really make you forget you're watching a film.
I did not know anything about it before, so I just sat down and watched. After 10 minutes I was totally engaged and forgot I was watching a movie, I became fully involved in the lives of the characters. It helped that the acting was very good. It is about two women who work their day jobs cleaning houses in the United States, but they are from a different country and have their own opinions about Americans. This gentle indie film does not avoid the tougher issues, exploring themes of racial differences and job dissatisfaction through the lens of a character drama. From the opening scene to the end credits, each shot could be a photograph telling its own story. And every line feels 100% genuine you believe everything the characters say, the drama never feels forced. It is full of raw emotion and there is some sadness. It was... hypnotic. What a beautiful film!
Wow! David Lynch's Blue Velvet is a true masterpiece in every sense of the word. The colors, the characters, the story, the acting... Everything comes together in such a mind-blowing blast of style and wonder that can only be expected from the mind of a director like Lynch. He is a great director who never disappoints. Each of his works is unique in its own way, but to my mind this is his best work. Everything feels so perfectly dreamlike and original. It is as if he captured his dream on film. Cinema has the power to transport us to a place and time, and Lynch captured this somewhat imagined place and time with the perfect choice of cast and characters. It will never be there again, if it ever was, but it will continue to exist in this film, which he has shared with us all. What an imagination.
